Nice colour, but I'm glad I bought my new 4003 in 2010, I prefer thinner necks.
There is a bit of a heel, not really a volute per se, but then again there always has been the flat heel protruding slightly to the underside of the first fret area since the mid 1970s anyway.
Actually you can start to feel it about two third the way to the second fret.

Necks -the initial impression is what the but it works and you forget about it quickly.
You can play for hours and it just feels right
Wonder what a black/polished stainless guard would look like ?
I,ve got a jetglo and I change over the guards when it takes my fancy
NBD on a regular basis and it,s always well set up,ready to go.
