NBD - 78 Fretless PBass
Total impulse buy at GC. Walked in, saw it there, played it unplugged (my acid test), and it was just right. Go figure, I'm a Jazz Bass guy, haven't had a P since 1991, and I'm also a hack, so I ditched the only fretless I had about the same time. And to top it off, I don't really like natural finishes.
But it just spoke to me, sounded flippen' great unplugged with flats, nice buzzing off the rosewood board, which is in great shape, body has some bruises as one would expect, but overall, not beat up. Neck doesn't feel "much" different from my AVRI Jazz. Has typical changes, BAII bridge, brass nut, but stock pickups. I think the black guard is a replacement, but I don't care, it's not a collector piece, it's a player, and it plays great. And its not a pig, its lighter than my jazz by just a bit. I let it stay at GC for a few days, went back to see if it was still there and it was. Played it a bit through an amp and pulled the trigger. Tag was $900, I asked $750, they met me at $800.
I think you got a great deal. Usually I see fretless P's go for at least $1,000 if not 1200+
Thanks. Yeah, I did look on ebay to see what they go for, and it seemed like a decent price even at $900.
Giging it tomorrow w/ my '76 SVT! Should sound amazing if I can do it justice. Played tonight with my iPod and cans, and I might be ok, my intonation was pretty good.
Should be interesting!
Nice score, man! I had a '76 fretless P, but replaced the neck with a fretted one, as I already had a fretless bass and no fretted. Those pics have given me a hankering to change it back. Good to hear you'll be gigging it. I'm always a bit reluctant to take anything but the fretted on a gig.
That thing is beautiful!
Gig report - Double bill at an outdoor charity thing.
AMAZING! I am hooked! Played it on a number of songs I had in mind, and several that I had not planned to.
One - it sounded amazing
Two - I found it easier to hear and therefore stay in tune than I ever anticipated in a live situation, and we were in a lousy sound environment.
Loads of fun, looking forward to exploring it more, very surprised at how easy it was to adapt to, interesting what time and experience will do. I didn't have a clue the last time I owned a fretless. So flag I gave it another go!
Congrats! What is the nut width on that beauty?
Nice score for drop-dead sure. I'm not a big fan of natural (I generally prefer darker wood), but that's a nice axe indeed. I have an early '76 Walnut FL P-bass that had a one-piece maple neck w/ slight ski-jump issues, so I replaced the maple neck with an S9 epoxied rosewood board/neck (from here). That bass will go in my casket if I have any say.
Thanks. I LOVE walnut, BTW. I'd like to one day replace my long ago sold P Elite II with a walnut Elite II, those look awesome I think.
Great bass, great price. Congrats!
