So, I bid on this bass on ebay, thinking I wouldn't win, and I ended up winning it for $187.50. So, here it is.

well you finally got it huh.... my only issue with my black one was the crummy VVBT hazlab preamp setup ....

you want me to look for my string tree?

I never used that tree because it looked stupid, and I never had an issue with break angle over the nut causing rattle or issues NOT using it.

It's pretty awesome, actually. It's not super heavy, either.

Amimbari, I thought that the retainer was necessary, but if you say it's not, then I'll believe you. I really like this bass, especially the neckthru aspect. I'm pretty sure the switch is a kill switch, which is pretty cool.

without it you HAVE to be very careful how you wind the strings around the tuners.

I'll look and send it to you unless ordering one from somewhere is only like 5 bucks.

I'll let you know later if I have it in the parts closet. For under 200 I could not even sell you my 3b, so you did good!

So, is the way I've wrapped my strings fine? My only worry is the angle of the G string coming into the nut....it looks like it could pop the side of the nut off. (what a dirty sentence..... )

what it looks like and what it does are 2 different things, it may never move or crack the nut off, or the first day you play on it may crack it...

I even tried winding the strings backwards so the E string had the slight angle, and the G was more straightline. I won't tell you NOT having the tree is "nut-deadly", but only my experience with mine.

that said, on my Forum 3, then i had my string tree off, my entire nut broke off side ways. I re-glued it, and eventually, just the G string bit broke off.

May not happen to you, though. Gave me an excuse to cut a bone nut for it.

And P.S. Yours is definitely a 1988-1990 one, the horns are a bit wider than on ones from 1987. I've only recently realized that...

I honestly think this is MY best bass for metal.

Maybe its just me, but the horns seem a bit thinner and farther fro the neck in terms of width than my 1987 one.

But maybe its just me... i'll need to compare on in person some time
