NBD - Project, Lots of Photos

Well I finally finished my Parts J-bass. I refinished it flat black and I'm really happy with the results, just thought I'd give you a little photo album of the process. Not horribly detailed, but just some of the things that I had to do.

It all started with this. The body was supposedly an Ash Japanese made J-bass.

Little paint removal reveals a ply body with a veneer top.

Definitely a lot of dings I had to repair, but the neck pocket was the worst.

Drill, glue in dowel rod, sand, repeat. Also, the neck pocket was too deep for a Fender neck, so I patched in a piece of Alder to the neck pocket to raise it to the appropriate height. Previous owner(s) had a piece of plywood in there for the same purpose, which I promptly removed.

After all the holes were filled, body sanded to 320-grit, I applied 2 coats of sanding sealer with 220 then 320 block sanding in between.

Flat Black was Rustoleum 2X. I used an entire can for the body. 5 coats or so. Rubbed it smooth with 00 steel wool after it cured for 48 hours then applied Rustoleum 2x Matte Clear. Turned out pretty good, definitely want a Fender PJ to go along with this one same color scheme, etc.

Full Specs: Mighty Mite Jazz Neck (Satin Finish), Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Pickups, John East J-Retro, Babicz Full Contact Hardware Bridge, Hipshot HB-1s with a BT-1 detuner, Schaller Straplocks, and DR Black Beauties.

It sounds friggin awesome!!! Just got setup done on it and it is a monster player. I think my Geddy Lee might be getting mothballed with the way this one plays.
