NBD (soon) 1978 Walnut Fender Precision

Just bought this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121078320829...84.m1423.l2648

woop!

It will go well with my other bass, almost a twin except it has PJ dimarzios, and the body is walnut satin Squier. Still a vintage maple fb neck though.

Congrats I have a '75 fretless in Walnut (thats the official name) Very cool bass !

Figjam 03-14-2013 06:36 PM

Oh yeah, I've seen pictures of yours in another thread. Totally awesome. Blank board, rosewood or maple? I think it was rw?

godofthunder59 03-14-2013 06:39 PM

Yep rose wood! Is your body ash or alder? Mine is 4 piece Alder light and resonant, sounds f'ng great.

Figjam 03-14-2013 06:41 PM

I think it is alder from the photos. I am hoping it is.

godofthunder59 03-14-2013 06:42 PM

Either way that's a beautiful bass and a nice score!

Gord_oh 03-14-2013 06:42 PM

ive been eyeballing that on ebay. nice score, but its not a NBD until its delivered.
now you wait.

Figjam 03-14-2013 06:42 PM

Thanks! I had a 10% ebay coupon which I applied towards it.

and yea... you are right about the waiting

Congrats on the bass. I had one very similar to it back in the late 70's. Lots of bottom, great tone, and presence in the mix to die for. We recorded one of our live shows back then, and I could hear every single note on the playback as clear as a bell, and we had a guitar, keyboard, drums, trumpet, and sax in the band. I eventually sold it to buy a computer. Wish I didn't <sniff>.

Figjam 03-14-2013 07:01 PM

At least you have a 82 jazz and an E series precision! I have had good experiences with 82 fenders as well as E series. In fact, my other precision has an 82 neck on it (even though the serial points to 78/79) and I have two E series stratocaster necks.

KyleSerlington 03-14-2013 07:17 PM

i love how those look, i'm probably gunna make a warmoth replica someday with a few changes (black block inlays!). judging by the grain though it's probably an ash body

Figjam 03-14-2013 07:27 PM

It does seem to have ashlike grain at parts, it seems so foggy its hard to tell. But you are probably right. Either way its 8.5 pounds so I am happy.

Ha. I have a lefty. Same color, same pick guard, same cream Dimarzio. Attachment 324570

Matt R. 03-14-2013 07:30 PM

Well, not the same fingerboard.

Figjam 03-14-2013 07:45 PM

Thats awesome. Wild how they did the fender logo on lefties.

That's the way Fender did lefty logos in late 70's, starting in 1976 when they started putting the serial number on the headstock and changed the model name to a smaller font. In the 1968 - early-1976 period Fender used the larger "TV logo" font and that wouldn't fit comfortably on a lefty headstock, so for lefty instruments made in that period they left out the model name and used just the Fender logo, here's a picture of my lefty '75 P:

Very cool!

Figjam 03-31-2013 02:25 PM

It has arrived!

Havent plugged it in yet, but it is a perfect weight and the neck feels great!
