Neck wood

Ive had a mexican made standard p bass for about 3 years now and im looking into the american made p bass. I have a rosewood fretboard but i like the look of maple much better. I understand that it makes a huge difference for the body wood type but does it affect the tone of the bass from maple to rosewood on the fretboard?

actually the fingerboard wood; rosewood vs maple affects the sound much more than body wood

Since you have frets and the strings are not directly in contact with the wood, the tonal difference will be negligible.

So overall the fingerboard makes almost no difference in tone?

Honestly, you'll have to decide that for yourself. Check out this thread and try searching TB. There are plenty of threads on the topic.

My experience is that no, the difference on a fretted bass is negligible.

EDIT: Here's another thread too.

Does fretboard wood truly make a difference?

Don't fret. Ignore all the posts. If you prefer maple, go with maple. No-one will ever say "oh shame, he's got a maple neck".
