Did you try turning the volume all the way down on the j pickup and all the way up on the p pickup?

In these situations it is always a good idea to post a sound sample of "punch and clarity"

Sell it and buy P Bass or another Jazz bass with PJ Pickups...

Brain fart. For some reason I was thinking the deluxe jazz is a PJ. Nevermind. I'm a silly goose.

Get a P-Bass. The neck pickup on a J is in close proximity to where a P pup would be, but it is made completely different.

I have a P and a J. 2 different animals. My solution? I'm having a custom P/J made. It does P, it does more defined like a J but not the same tone.

I think he means turn down the bridge p'up and solo the neck p'up.
Also try adjusting your amp EQ for more mid-range punch.
Taper off treble and lows till you're satisfied.

It was a case of temporary stupidity. But yeah, soloing the neck pickup and turning down the tone on my jazz bass sounds pretty p-ish.

I like the J neck married to the Pbody. I disconnected the j pickup all together. Groovy tone

This will get you close:
* Run the neck pickup at 80%, and the bridge pickup at 20% (this helps maintain the 'dual coil' of the two pickups)
* On the preamp, crank the mids, cut the highs a little, and boost the bass a touch.

Experiment

Carol Kaye has always recommended a foam or felt mute.
Foam for pizzicato, felt for pick users.
Read about it on her website and try it.
It's subtle muting effect that attenuates string noise, spurious harmonics and slightly attenuates highs. The effect is a clarifying of the fundamental, and the bass tends to sit in the mix better.
You'll see what I mean.
It's cheap to try (or free depending on your resources),
It may help you get the sound you want.
If not - disregard.
