I'll just echo what others have said- my StingRay 5 is very susceptible to changes in weather/ humidity. I was constantly tightening and loosening the trussrod from gig to gig. Both of my Peavey's, and my Millennium 5 especially (which is funny, as my other is a graphite-necked GV) have the most stable necks I've encountered. I may have to tweak it a bit every now and again, but not nearly as much as the SR.

tightening and loosening depending on weather isnt something i would consider a defect but if the truss rod really is maxed now, something is up with that neck.

doesnt necessarily need to be replaced though. you could have the frets pulled, the relief trued out and then re fret it. depending on the market, a 250-350 dollar job.

my Ibanez GSR105ex was like that, I couldn'tt deal with it and I traded it in.I have a 200 dollar P-copy with the most stable neck I've ever seen. I think a lot of it has to do with the mass of the neck, more chunky necks will need less adjustment.

You Sir have more patience than I do. I just traded my Gibson made Tobias Growler away as I just could"nt do battle with the neck anymore. Hope all works out.

During a jam the other day playing my buddy's '74 P-Bass, I asked; "...anyone got a Phillips and big flathead?

They flipped when I dropped the strings, popped the neck up a bit & tweaked it...in all about 6 mins. MUCH BETTER!*

Now my 2002 & my 2010 P-V are solid and have not been tweaked ever.

*Junked the Roto's for some DR Sunbeams later that night to cap it off. Improved it even more.

Some gear is like that. If it's new(er) however, that would be annoying as all get out.

The only time one of my bass' necks moved was when I went from flats to rounds. Both are maple with satin poly finishes and hardly move at all. They are kept in the their cases when not in use, so consider that.

You could put a dampit in the case with it....

Yes, but it knows when the weather is changing. Bass necks are made from trees and that means they are not all alike. I really think it's just about luck and not how much you paid. I've got a Squier P/J 5er that is almost as stable as my Graphite Modulus.

On the other hand, my Conklin needs tweaked every time the weather changes. I mean sometimes you pick it up and it's literally unplayable just making thrashy noises. But a few tweaks is really no biggie.

A maxed truss rod on the other hand is to me a clear defect and not just some tree thing.

I think you may want to look at some way of maintaining a consistent humidity with this bass. Chefs recommendation is the one to follow, IMO. Even then, it may just be a finicky neck that is simply more prone to climate effects. I've sold basses off because of this. But as others have said, there should be enough give to accommodate the tweaks, which tend to even each other out on a functioning neck. A maxed truss rod is never good.

I appreciate the suggestions folks. I'm fine with having to tweak a bass regularly to get it where I was as long as I can actually get it to where I want it to be, ya know? As much sense as it might make, I'm not willing to have to go through hoops to keep my bass in working order. If it can't sit in my basement or room without going wonky, there's a problem.

Luckily, Brad took a look at it earlier and the it turns out that the truss isn't quite maxed yet but it's crazy difficult to adjust for some reason or another and the neck has some pretty serious bow going on. I'm taking it to the doctor on Friday and we'll see what the real deal is for once and for all. This bass is sticking around. If I have to kick the neck into place with my new boots, I will.

Some of my basses I need to add or subtract relief several times a year. Some of them I never touch.
Same boat here..from mid 70s and sunny to 30 and snowing in the same day can really do a number on the gear

Bummer... I've always been pretty care free with necks, and I like decently low action too. Maybe its the California weather?

I feel your pain but glad I'm not the only one! My Gwb is very temperamental and my setup is such that ill notice even the slightest bit of relief but it sings so well I just deal with it . My neck through on the other hand, always solid even with the action slammed.
