New Bass - SR 910 MOL

Dear all

Just wanted to show off my christmas present from and to myself

Ibanez SR910 MOL - MIJ 1998 - Serial No.: F9807XXX

Got this beauty for approx 400 $. (more expensive in europe i guess)

Pickups sound pretty darn great - so does the pre-amp.
Couple of dings and what you could expect from a used bass, but overall pretty great condition.
Supposedly a mahogany body? Dont know what wood the neck is - maybe you can help me?

What do you think about my new addition?

EDIT: Bump-question in bottom

Are the links suspicious?
Or does no one like my Ibby? :-)

Oh yeah: the price is absolutely right (I payed the same for an SR915 last year)

The neck looks like a wenge/bubinga/wenge/bubinga/wenge,
'cause it looks a bit clearer (you have an ash body bass) than jatoba/bubinga/jatoba/bubinga/jatoba on SR1010 (mahogany),
but yet I definitely can be wrong btw

Check bridge screws out (I mean intonation ones), it's one of the very few weak points (whenever bought used, of course) of that beautiful bass.

Congrats

Cheers,
Wallace

Thanks for the reply Wallace.

I'm surprised about your info on the body material. I got a receipt with the bass that clearly states SR910 MOL.

MOL meaning mahogany oiled?
I don't think it looks oiled either, but i have seen an SR900 with an ash body, and the grain was very different from this.

Exactly: "mahogany oil" it's the finish, the same as on SR1010, that's mahogany body.

I'm sure about that...

SR910 it's ash (or rather, "light ash", right)

on the laminate neck composition I'm less sure, as already said

Cheers,
Wallace

Thanks for clearing that up Wallace.

Now that you pointed it out - i see that it looks nothing like the other Mahogany Ibanez's.
must have been a mistake in recognizing the material/color at the shop where it was bought.

Just a little bump question if anyone is willing and able to answer:

I cant seem to locate this bass in any Ibanez catalogues.
The 98 catalogues have SR's that seem to be newer than mine (jack in on top, and other details) even though my serial starts with 98?

Anyway, maybe it isnt in the catalogues?

Just digging in to my Ibanez's pedigree out of sheer curiosity, any help is greatly appreciated.

that body is most definitely Ash. Its tough to mistake the huge grain patterns of Ash.

That neck, the bigger pieces actually look like Mahogany to me. I'm no expert, but I've never heard of an SR with Mahogany neck. It could very well be Wenge, as they've used that a lot. But that particular pick you posted makes it look like mahogany, to me. It doesn't look dark enough to be Wenge and Wenge usually has longer "open" senctions of grain, rather than a bunch of little marks, like that.

**Definitely not Wenge.

Allright, thanks for shedding some light on that.

It's definetly lighter in color than all the wenge i've seen on Ibby necks. Surely i different type - but mahogany seems a bit odd.

EDIT: Jatoba???

(jat/bub/jat/bub/jat) ?

The body is ash; mahogany doesn't have such figuring and is usually much darker, with a red(ish) tint.

EDIT: i found these photos - http://fr.audiofanzine.com/basse-ele.../i.475922.html - and the neck seems to be made from jatoba pieces with bubinga stripes...
