I'm actually building a parts bass like that right now...for less than 400 bucks

Av's were never $1600. The P basses were $1449.99 , I believe the jazz were maybe $50 more depending on where you shopped, never $1600. I have owned many and watched the prices on them. |

But the overall point seems to be that this new line doesn't seem to have any value beyond the former AV line. Fender seems to be trying to capitalize on the collective GAS that we all know and love.
I'm sure ultimately supply and demand will even out the pricing. Unless there is enough of a buyers market for this new line.
I love Fenders and have always owned at least one, but I have never bought one new. Probably never will, which is also true for other gear I own. It's just too hard to justify that much extra money just to have something brand new. Especially now that I'm really happy with what I have. Ok, I'm done now.

The prices obviously have to go up somewhere, as they aren't exactly coining it bigtime at the moment. It's normal to hide a price increase somewhat by changing or improving a few features, and the prices of some of the better MIM models was too close to the AV line.
Now they have a few price bands in effect that have a little space between them, and the AV series rightly take their place at the top of the ladder. The American Standards remain at a competitive pont for a good US made bass, and they fit perfectly with the majority of Fender players' needs and wants.
The AV becomes more of a niche product, while CS becomes once again mostly a proper custom shop, without the TM series type instruments that were too close to the AV series.
I for one never buy new instruments, so their new prices only interest me insofar as how the resale is affected. I imagine these will go for around 12-1400 used in the near future, which is a great price for what look like absolute killer instruments. At that price I'd buy the red P without blinking. |

My Lakland USA Joe Osborn does not have this issue, so it's possible to do it right. I would have expected Fender to pay attention to this detail at this price point.

When they redid the American standards a few years ago they brought them out at a high price (like $1500) and the market demanded it go down, which it did. These prices could change a bit, but these days I'm not so sure.

I can't quite allow a completely "stock" bass to be played in my hands!!

You can have both.............I surely do!!
I have one of everything and enjoy each and every one of them. I play my P-Bass 90% of the time but I do break out the Jazz, Tele, Aerodyne, Stingray, etc from time to time just to be different!
There is no need to be "stuck" with anything!!
Let your freak-flag fly my brother!!!

I try like hell to like them and I can make them work but I know at heart they just can't do what a P can...but they look so damn good!

Also, I have huge hands and that narrow nut doesn't work so well for me doing my thing - but I can manage with a pick.
Whatever your opinion of Fender is.....you have to admit that they are the iconic look of the electric bass guitar.

The pickup cover makes a nice anchor for slapping and pick playing. It's the opposite on a P for me, where I prefer the bridge cover because you can insert mutes and use it as a great anchor for pick playing (if that's your thing)

Once the price stabilizes that is.
Right now I have an odd number of basses. Which means I need to sell one. No, buy. No no no, sell...
