The regular AVRIs are now priced higher than the American Deluxe basses? |

I like to have one main bass that I play for years, so a few hundred dollars averaged out over years isn't that big of a deal, especially if I could just wait for a 15% coupon.

It's obvious these have moved up close to the bracket where the TM CS models were a few years ago, and the CS is pushing consumers towards true custom instruments again. I have a feeling many who would have bought a '64 J or a '59 P from the CS a few years ago would now consider a new AV.
I reckon street prices will settle in around the 1600-1700 mark and used ones will hover around 1000-1200 in a year or so. |

The fact still remains the street price is still 33% higher than last year. Most people with used CS basses have trouble selling them here on this board for $1700-$1800. That's what an AVS is going for even with you 15% off.

It's impossible to say whether or not they are worth it unless you have actually played one. The presence of Fender knock-offs selling for 2k+ has already proven that people are willing to pay a lot for a really good P or J, the question is, do these fall into that category?

The point I'm making and, you don't have to agree with me, is that we are now in used CS prices. I'm not sure what the last CS P bass sold for here on TB but I have seen many that sit here for weeks at $1700-$1800. Is the new AVS at the caliber of a CS bass now? I don't know but judging from my AVS 62 in comparison to my 64 jazz or my 59 P, I would say they have a ways to go.

Sometimes things don't really klick between one particular bass and one particular player. Being able to resell reasonably close to what you bought at is a good thing. |

Vintage ones go for big bucks, even dogs. Used prices reflect desirability and not necessarily quality. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Dallas, TX USA | | | I'm very late to this discussion, but I'm both excited and disappointed after seeing the Sweetwater site. I'm excited because I have been interested in a black/maple/gold guard precision, but I didn't want to commission a custom shop version (too much money). I've also had good experiences with Sweetwater and the AV Series from Fender. I have a '57 2-tone burst precision that I got from Sweetwater that is one of my favorite basses. I'm disappointed because I got '57 new for around $1300 about 3 years ago. I'm disappointed because I would have been willing to go around $1500 (inflation and being able to buy it immediately) for a new '58 in black, but $1999 is out of line. For the kind of money that they're asking, I could commission a custom bass at Bluesman Vintage. Yes, it wouldn't be an official Fender bass, but I recently had a '66 slab precision built by John that is amazing. By raising the price to the levels that they're at, Fender has crossed over into the territory owned by the smaller custom builders like Bluesman and Nash. The headstock decal and immediate gratification aren't really worth it to me given that I'm not really someone who trades a lot of gear. I'm more of a buy and hold guy. Just my $0.02. |

Just my $0.02. | I went through the same thing. I did end up getting a 63 P in Sonic blue cheap, which took the sting out. I had to have a 63 for the shallowest of reasons, I love the sonic blue and it's my birth year. To me it was worth the gamble to let the 62 AVRI go. Short of the 63 being pure firewood (highly unlikely), I'll be giddy to have it.
I could not get right with Jazz pricing. I blew them off, threw another few hundred on the fire and bought a Dingwall Super J5. Whole nother world and a very different animal, but custom built standards and quality.
I would love to be a fly on the wall during pricing meetings. Fender is in a very unique position in that they have a rabid fan base. They have also shown that they will happily push fan loyalty to the breaking point. It's a crazy game of chicken and thus far, Fender has been the winner.
