Believe me, selling my Stingray would not be an easy decision - I used it (and ONLY it) on every gig for the first two years I owned it. It has major sentimental value. But it has two major shortcomings - it is quite heavy (even with a wide strap), and it boasts a nearly non-existant G-string response.

I started using a Precision a little over a year ago and it got me hooked on them. I currently use two lightweight relic P's on the road, and I just can't see myself ever going back to the Stingray. They just fit in every situation. We play Harry Belafonte, Flo-Rida and Dion & The Belmonts all in the same set and the P rises to every occasion.

I had been keeping the Stingray around as my "wedding/function" bass, since it's in beautiful condition and I didn't find the relic look to be appropriate for fancy occasions. But even at the last wedding, the weight was bothering me a bit and it wasn't really my sound.

I'm nearly all-in with the Precision now - I figure why not go the extra mile? The AV '63 would be my "nice" bass, while my two relics would continue to be my road warriors. I may even drop a P-Retro in it, so it keeps a little bit of the active Stingray flavor.

Dang, I'm rambling again aren't I? Did I convince you guys or what? I sure convinced myself.

I like the darker and more brownish tortoise.
For players who prefer the darker tort, Fender has plenty of options, since that is what comes on every single model. Why not offer something unique and most importantly period-correct on the Vintage line?

Just wait a few weeks, it will wear off. I was immediately smitten with the idea of one of these but decided I'm going to wait for a NOS 57RI to pop up. I just like the overall look better and I can live with the "incorrect" pup covers. I will admit that these did get me off my Am Std kick, even though past experience is telling me that they will be a better all around work horse. Time will tell. Might do a last minute Seminole Red order...

couldnt agree with you more, dude. A '57 reissue P has been on my list for years now. I just love the tinted glossy neck on those, these new reissue maple necks on the '58 just look so...plain. kicking myself really hard for not picking one of '57's for a blowout price just above 1k at the end of 2012.

If you don't mind used, lot's of those 57RI out there. I've had mine about 3 years and love it. The build quality it excellent, it's lightweight and with TI flats sounds and plays amazing. Every time I play it for a gig or rehearsal I think if I had to have 1 bass this would probably be it.

That said looking forward to checking out the new vintage series. I'm curious how the 58 will compare to the 57. Also, I dig the lacquered pickguard. Does anyone know, were they always lacquered or was that something that changed in 58? Just noticed yesterday starting to get some real relicing on the top of my pickguard where I rest my thumb.

I believe all the originals were lacquered and none of the AVs were until now. I never understood why, the bare metal feels lousy to the touch to me.

Agree. In fact for awhile I had a 62RI tort guard on mine but eventually switched back. Wonder how hard it would be to laquer it?

Ok never mind everything I said in this thread. I just ordered a 3TS 58. I even paid for expedited shipping. Better judgement be damned. Reviews and pics to follow. I managed to score it at my price threshold too. I just didn't want to deal with a certain "specialty" bass store for the NOS 57 they still have and after adding in all the upgrades and G&G case I would have bought for another US Standard I was eyeing, $1699 just made sense. I thought about what a previous poster said about how the un-tinted necks would darken anyway over time, which pushed the decision. Anyway, I'm super stoked.

Did you make your mind up - if you are set on the P bass then go for it.

BTW I have just been watching a DVD of a recent gig where I used my Classic Stingray (late 50s/early 60s classic British intros and pop/rock and roll - two guitars, drums, bass, vocals) - the bass sound even right across and right up the neck - BUT the mutes are engaged and there's a lot of thumpy stuff plucked around the neck joint - the point being the G string thing is a bit of an on stage phenomena - I can't believe your 2 band is so different from mine.

All the best with the P - I may yet buy one - love the sonic blue look.

AND that seminole red colour chip looks similar to fiesta red to me - whereas the pictures of basses I've seen look closer to dakota red - curious!

Yeah, after watching the promo video a few more times, I was hooked.
It took some work, but I beat it down to what I felt was a reasonable price. After considering several P basses, it just came to this one. I honestly wasn't even considering one of these but figured I'd see if I could get a better price at the last minute and lo and behold, here we are. Also ordered a set of the obligatory (for me) TI's but I'm interested to see if the included flats are new formula. Maybe Ill be one of the lucky "46".

I do believe that the G-thing is indeed a bit of "on-stage phenomena" - but my P-Basses don't suffer from it. Phenomena or not, it affects the way I play.

Yes, the Stingray is sold pending payment. I'm going to slow up a bit though and REALLY make sure the '63RI is the right move. Many life changes coming and this will be my last big buy for a while. My buddy has a refin '68 Dakota Red Precision around the same price point and if it blows me away, I think that would be the one to get.

Bass Central still has a "new" 57RI in blonde and a 62 in Oly, if anyone is interested in snatching up one of the older AVRI's. A bass I was heavily considering was an NOS 2000 62 RI, with case and candy for $1500 from Chicago Music exchange. It still had the pg plastic on it and looked flawless. So there are still a few NOS AVRI's floating around at good prices and a bunch of used as well. GBase has a few listed.
