I have a feeling they tinted the guards because unlike the old nitro ones these newer vinyl ones will never change colour with age. So in a few years the instrument will look authentic when the necks amber up.

What's so funny? The old nitro guards became greenish with age, and no mass produced instrument will use nitro guards today for the same reason Fender stopped in the '60s, namely their highly flammable nature (and maybe additionally their tendency to shrink and crack).
