New Ibanez SR 300 vs Older Version pickup[ question

I had an older SR 300 with the slap button for scooping the mids for slap. I loved the feel and playability of the bass but hated the pickups because the higher strings were just too weak compared to the E and A strings.

The new model offers a 3 band eq and says the pickups are well balanced now. Anyone have experience in comparing the two?

I am very curious, like I said I love the playability especially the feel of the neck of these, just not the unbalanced sound.

Thanks

If you like the bass, then just change the pickups. It will be cheaper than buying a newer complete SR bass. If you really want to try the new stock pickups, I'm sure you could order them through Ibanez.

Otherwise, people will tell you to get some barts. Which you could. Also, there are a few custom pickup makers that could make you a pickup in that shape.

I traded it around 3 months ago. So I have to start fresh. I am just looking at a cheapie SR 250 right now but it has the same pups and pre as the 300. If it is more balanced I just might get it. I love the small necks, especially with my bad hands.

I hate to admit it but GAS and easy financing at L and M will likely be my downfall

They get far too much of my $$$ but since I quit smoking I reward myself with music gear from time to time

oh ok. Well I've played the newer, lower model SR basses at Guitar Center.

While the particular tone of the pickups overall isn't my thing, they were surprisingly punchy. I didn't pick up on any imbalances string to string, but I was in a store and the setups on the basses weren't the best.

All that said, you can often find great deals on new, old stock Ibanez basses if you hunt around. You could also buy used and get a higher model with barts for a similar price as a lower model would be new. While Ibanez are overall some of the best examples of the quality that can be achieved with mass production techniques, they don't tend to hold a lot of resale value. Which is to your benefit, as a prospective buyer!

Hmm!! I never thought of the analogy until now. From your comment about excellent quality and low resale value. Kinda like a Dodge, comfy, well made cars and trucks, but loose value like crazy, unlike a Chev (Fender) where the quality may lack at times, but the resale stays up there because of the name.

Back on topic, thanks for the input. I don't know if I want to get one of these or just order a Modern Player Jazz, the sunburst one has been on my GAS list since the first day I saw them.
