Newbie bass question: wich one to get this kinda sound?
I'm a new member here. I'm a guitar player for almost 20 years and i'm now toying with the idea of getting a bass guitar.
Due to my growing interest in gothic/post-punk music, i'm in love with these bass sounds:
Sisters of Mercy
Being such a newbie in the bass word, i know nothing about basses :) I can tell the difference from a Les Paul or Tele or Strat sound when i hear them on record, as they have a characteristic sound, but for a bass sound i don't have any reference.
I'm narrowing my first search to Fender P, Fender J or Rickenbacker bass, because they are the ones i know better from seeing bands playing...
Wich one (P, J, Rick) do you think it would be most suited to get these kind of sounds, from the Youtube links i posted? Or any one of these 3 will do just fine (or any other options)? Are the examples posted chatacteristic of a particular bass, just like a Les Paul, Strat or Tele?
Thanks in advance!
As you're a guitar player as well (me too) you know darn well effects play huge part.
But I tell ya
A Ric's too chracterized, even if with dual output (stereo like) option
A Precision is and isn't as well
I mean: P sound is incredibly unmistakeable and versatile at the very same time
A Jazz bass is: alone, D.I.ed, effected, passive or active, the most versatile and 360° oriented choice you can opt for.
PS: and what about Killin' Joke?!
So would you say that for the kind of tones i'm after, the Jazz Bass, for a new bass user, would be the best/safest bet? I'm just double asking because i just watched a concert from the first band i posted (Soror Dolorosa) and the bass was a P...
Killing Joke, of course! Love the Night Time album, but the latest one (MMXII) is also very good :)
But if you're lookin' to effect it (that's where my, say, electric guitar "approach" got involved) a Jazz bass can be a better chameleon to your needs.
I mean: a Precision bass can work for everything yet stayin' a Precision bass
A Jazz bass "becomes" everything
If you're tellin' me: "I just wanna play punk rock", I'd say "go get a P bass now"
If you're goin' a bit more "articulated"... naaa... a Jazz bass' for ya
And, comin' from guitars, a thinner neck (Jazz got it thinner at the nut) is a faster startin' point...
