I'm still more of a JJ guy myself, but no doubt, the VP is, by far, the best P I've ever touched or heard... at least for what I personally look for in a P, which is pretty much the same... not a completely faithful rep, but kind of an updated take on it. |

It is only 8 pounds, has BEAUTIFUL figuring on the neck, and just punches and grinds like no tomorrow. Simply a pleasure to play... very 'modern' take on a P that works great for the pop/funk/hip hop sort of thing I typically play. Always seems to slot itself into the mix nicely, without the 'boom and mud' that I often hear from guys using P Basses in a live setting (or course, the Dunlop Nickel Rounds help with that, along with the rig).
I also dig the fact that it is passive, has a gloss poly finish on the neck, poly on the body, and with the Dunlops that last a LONG time, it is pretty much a 'hassle free/maintenance free' instrument.
Continue to just love it, and the neck feels surprisingly 'vintage' P, considering it is a 5 string. B string is very nice on it also... not 'huge' or 'amazing' or anything, but it is a nice, even extension down from the open E which works well in the context within which I use it. | I totally agree with you on the B strings on the Nordys, probably the most even and usable B string I have ever played. Everything on the B just fits and I never have to adjust my line or position because the note doesn't sound right. I will take that over a B that sounds huge in the first position but less than desirable everywhere else.......

Amazing growl, and lower mid focus. The .130 B string is big and beefy. On my way to a gig tonight to give it the true test.

But the growl of the Ash/maple VJ5C with the DR Lo-Riders was full of growl and punch! Love the grind definition. What a wonderful, Amazing bass! Really came to life with more attitude with the DR Stainless Lo-Riders.
Stunning, wonderful night of bass tone. The band was not that great tonight, but my bass tone was superb. Take what you can get right?

Are they similar tension and feel to the RCocco nickels? |

SunBeams are the nickel version of the SS HiBeams, which have round cores. Both are slinky, with the SB's being the slinkiest/slickest and warmest of the two (nickel).
LoRiders get their name from their stiffness... e.g. you can set your action lower with less fret buzz... great for slappers.
Also, LR's have more midrange punch to them, whereas the SB/HB's tend to sound a little scooped.
Mix/match depends on the native tone of the bass and the overall sound you want. |

When I tried the RCocco nickels on my vj4 the tension was much higher and they did growl a lot more (which i like) they seemed to go off a bit quicker than the sunbeams I think. |

New nut, full electronics rewire and full setup. Plays like a different and new bass. Uber-quick turnaround, great price and well worth the shipping costs from the east coast and back.
I like to give credit where credit is due. Mo rules the repair kingdom!
Thanks M/Nordstrand!

Close scrutiny of any of the instruments he builds will (also) prove that. |
