NSHBD! (New semi-hollow bass day....Gibson Midtown content!)

I ordered this back on 11/15/12.....it finally showed up on Friday.

So far I'm pretty happy with it. Fit & finish are real nice, no playability issues so far. I haven't put it through it's paces at a rehearsal just yet, but will this week. My initial impressions are that it's heavier than I'd imagined, but pretty comfortable to play. I think I will mostly use the neck p/u soloed, as it gives the most fundamental low end grunt that's pleasing to my ears. Both pickups or just the bridge pickup seems a little too twangy.

Neck is nice, not as thin as my Thunderbird, not as familiar as my Precision....seemingly more in the neighborhood of my 4003, but a little slimmer.

Can't wait to play it through my big rig. But like I said, it's been on order since before Thanksgiving of last year so I suppose I can wait a coupla more days.

I gotta give a shout out to fellow TalkBass member calexia13. He's been like my support group while I've been waiting for this thing....always asking "Is it here yet? Well, be patient man, it'll all be worth it!"

I owe you a beer sir.

And yes, I'm a dork. I ordered a custom truss rod cover with my last name on it....the closest I'll ever get to my own signature series. Look, I was bored waiting on this thing for FOUR months! Gimme a break!

An interesting side note, the case (glue) smells like vanilla. I mean like overwhelmingly so! Far out.

Oh yeah....pics:

Thanks for posting! I have had my Midtown on order since early December and no sign of it yet. Glad you are liking it. I really don't know what to expect from this bass as I have never played a semi hollow or a Gibson bass at all. Its going to be a big change from Stingrays and Warwicks!

It's my first semi hollow too. It's definitely different, but that's why I got it. I couldn't justify buying another solid body four banger!

I like it! Why such a long wait? Any clips?

I blame Guitar Center. I don't deal with them very often, but they did what they could. I think AMS got the first crack at these, and I had negotiated a pretty sweet trade in deal on my G&L so I was kind of committed to the deal.

No clips. I'll try, but I'm not really set up for recording here at the house, and the rehearsal space is far too chaotic for me to attempt to record something worth everyone's time!

Congratulation on your new HB bass. It's a beautiful bass. What scale is it?

Heavier than I thought, I haven't weighed it yet, but I'd guess 9+. Neck dive isn't really a problem yet, but I've mostly been playing sitting down. I'll give it the full test drive this week at rehearsal. Plus I have a gig on the 12th that plan on using it at.

Just messed around with the new strap I bought for this bass.

Um, pretty considerable neck dive actually. It is pretty top heavy.

I may have to rethink my choice of straps as the one I got was more "cool" than practical. Hmmmmm....

Very nice volume unplugged. Obviously not practical for any jamming situations, but audible enough for noodling around on your own.

What strings do you think you'll run on it? Congrats on receiving your long-awaited bass! I think the personalized truss rod cover is very cool
