A nut(ty) question

So here goes:

All things being equal (two identical basses, same strings, etcetera), would you be able to hear/tell a difference between a nut filed down perfectly versus one not so perfect, provided they had the same action, the same angle on the headstock, everything?

Thanks.

Abstract tonality - no.
Feel - absolutely.
"Out Front" - probably, manifesting as less than clean playing, so it sounds a little out of the pocket.

Exception: if the nut slots are way too high, the notes on the lowest frets can pull sharp.

Hi.

I'd guess by "one not so perfect" You're referring to the actual shape of the slots, not the height of the strings at the nut?
Like using a triangle file instead of the round one .

If so, the the answer from me would be no.
It just looks unprofessional.
Not to mention it wears down pretty fast as well unless the nut is made out of metal.

Regards
Sam
