I'll probably go ahead and order them soon, so if nobody knows, I'll report back. | I have a set of RS 668's on my Ampeg. The .20 is plain, not wound. It plays awesome, strings are nice and beefy.

Thanks for confirming, though. I'll give them a try anyway. |

| | | | Which string to use Hi,
I got 8-sting bass octaved (Ibanez MC 980) 5 years ago and I'am trying repairing it now, it's almost done. But I don't know which strings to use. Iam from the Czech republic and I can't find 8-stings octaved set in any of shops here. So may I use 4 regular strings from bass and 4 from guitar? Is it same? Sorry for my bad English and thanks for answer.
b.t.w: it's really beautiful bassguitar |

I don't believe that guitar strings would be long enough.
Can you get piccolo bass strings? If so, you can add those to a traditional set of bass strings.

| | | | So I finally found some strings for 8-sting bass in German shop. It was really hard to find... thank you for your advice anyway, I appreciate it. :-) |

The Thunderbacker... maple body, wenge/flame neck with pau ferro 'board, Thunderbird pickups, Hipshot hardware. Satin lacquer body finish and Tru-Oil neck finish.
Plug it in, add a little overdrive and it really sings!
(I know there's only 4 strings on it in this pic... I was waiting for my RotoSounds to arrive) [/quote] |

It was a guinea pig from the start. It was a 4-string, then 5, then 8... it was also a test for my home-made Thunderbird pickups. |

What bridge is that? |

Not entirely original... I'm totally waiting for John Hall's minions to come knocking at my door
The bridge is a normal Hipshot A for 4 string... I moved the saddle pins full right, then made a smaller groove for the high-octave strings. I ran the small strings under the bass strings at the anchor point. It's not entirely elegant, but it's better than buying a $200 ABM for now. |

Schaller is much better alternative at less than half the price. Allows individual string intonation and height adjustments. Available from Warmoth or special order from All Parts. Also works for 12ers. |

I see Mr Cataldo has been paying attention... I was inspired by his Thunderbirds, and I think he was inspired by my pickguards |

I like your work a lot but my pickguards are inspired by Formica "Boomerang" plastic laminate of the 50s and this table I designed and manufactured in the 1980s.

We are the same... maybe kindred even. I looked at the old boomerang pattern for inspiration too. In fact, my first prototype had that formica in black/aqua as it's pickguard material... a boomerang made from boomerang print |

| | | | Here's my 8-string - another Mazeti similar to Gelfin's in post #163, but a more sculpted body, much blonder wood, different fret markers and control layout. |

The Schaller has the benefit of being able to cut the saddles where you want them. With my mutt of an 8-string that was very important. I got the string spacing juuust right and still have the strings over that old EMG enough to not get any volume loss.

Since the Hipshot can be either through-body or topload, I am drilling for four ferrules for the low strings. The high octaves can anchor in the bridge and the lows can come through the body | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
