ATK 305 w Musicman 2-Band Pre!!

I wanted something to replace my old Musicman Stingray 5 HH for regular Rock / Alternative gigs. I had to leave the group for a day job 3 years ago and sold this beauty not long after:

If I recall it cost me $1800 CDN or so with or without taxes I can't remember. It was a great bass for that gig and I really loved the aggressive tone of it.

I read somewhere that the ATK pickup spacing from the nut or bridge is the same as a Musicman. i.e. "The Sweet Spot" and it got me GAS'ing.

Well HMZ was kind enough to ship his old ATK 305 up to me here in Canada and all I can say is wow! This is a remarkable bass for the money!

The tone was aggressive right out of the box but didn't quite have as refined a sound of a Musicman. To my ears it didn't qo quite as low or as high and had a low mid bump that really cut.

I had a few 70's 2-band pre-amp Musicman boards lying around that I purchased here on TB from UncleFluffy:

PCBs for DIY clone 2-band Preamps

I had already ordered the parts so off I went to assemble the pre-amp and install....

Tada!

I kept the original toggle switch for the pickup and added a master tone control before the 2 band pre.

The install wasn't really as easy as I had expected. The only pots available that work with the pre-amp are from Mouser and are not quite long enough to get through the wood mounting holes. I had to use a drill and wood bit to remove 1/8" of material to get enough threads for the washer and nut to hold the pots on.

I also dremeled some material away to make clearance for the soldier joints on the pots. I had to tape them to keep them from grounding out on the conductive paint cavity.

The result???? Strung up with new Fodera Strings...Simply awesome!! It's very much like a Musicman in tone and aggressiveness. The pre-amp must have only cost me $30 total in parts. The ATK 305 is a bargain even at new pricing. The combination of both is a great simulation of the real deal Musicman that I was going for and at a fraction of $1800.

I'm very impressed with this instrument.

It was this thread that got me thinking about doing this instead of just buying another Musicman. I'm glad I did. Thanks for starting this thread and all who participated in it.

Wow, awesome! I wish I had that preamp for my mod. Can you make some sound samples?

Sure thing! It might take me a couple of days to get to but yeah, I'll do that. I kinda wish I had a genuine Musicman so I could do a like for like sound comparison using the same amp/recording gear.

Here's some sound samples. Please don't judge me on the sloppy playing, I really was just noodling around trying to get a decent sample of the tones available with this pre plus the Master Tone knob addition.

There's two tracks here. One is just a quick slap track with some finger work in the end. The second goes a little more in depth to the pickup selections and all the tone variations. See the embedded comments below the wave to read what I was doing. Both tracks were recorded going in straight to my DAW with no compression or eq'ing of any sort. Just the raw sound of the bass.

There's plenty of zing and low punchy bass.

If you have enough cavity, try to put a varitone switch.Default capacitor is 2200pf.None-1000pf-1500pf-2200pf is my favorite. And further more, put ARTEC BCU unit semi ParaEQ after the default circuit. You can enjoy super funk y sound.

This is proto type.In this model ,I put 2 preamps to compare. One is default, the other is TUNE SB-1(10khz +18dB I forgot low boost spec). As a result, default is better, and the capacitance over 3300pf is no good.

Just the bass straight into Cubase. No processing at all.

Yes.Clipped sound just like slapping the string with strong power. When I put the P-EQ before preamp, the sound was no use.The purpose is the same as the high cut capacitor, making the peak at the highend freqency and distorting it slightly.Thank you for reading..

Feel is very light for a bass of this size believe about 9.1 lbs. nut is same with as sr 5 string but string spaceing at the bridge is 18mm not 16.5 makes a big dif if like me you're a big slapper.

Sound wise I'd say if you can't do it with this you can't do it. I can get crisp clean I can get dub . The front pickup is a monster on slapping with the balance all the way to the front . Rear three way splitter def makes a big dif in tone . I will agree that some have said the balance front to back seems all or nothing but the middle setting is perfect for rock metal multi use then just switch through the three way and find your tone.
