Notice the P pickup orientation on the white bass? The E/A string part of the pickup (is there a term for it?) is closer to the neck than the D/G string portion. The opposite is true for all the other basses.
Looks like a design change?? FWIW, The white one is the oldest (1986). There is a slight tonal difference between the white one and the black one, but since they have the same pickups and pre's I had attributed that to the different strings. Maybe

86 was the only year for normal-p.
there was no model4 or it would have had a normal-p as well. model1 got a bridge humbucker in 86.

It sounds too good to not buy it. The low B is just incredible.

That unit was not offered or imported into the USA for sale here.... If you ever see a guitar or bass with reflex pickups in them, you can instantly know it was a UK version.
here's the catalog page from 1992 when it was for sale.
.
The CHARVEL eliminator was only offered in the JAP catalog only.
it came with the Barden dualrails like the Fusion5's different neck/inlays and NO body ridge.
.
and yes it has a great B-string tone. |

But for Charvel/Jackson knowledge, you would be hard pressed to find someone who knows more |

Anyway, where that 3rd control knob (closest to the bridge) currently resides, used to be a 3-way pickup selector switch, which I found pretty useless.
The bass came stock with EMG P-J's, Volume, Tone, Gotoh tuners, and a Schaller 463 bridge.
I have since had the electronics upgraded to an EMG BTC system (Volume, Blend, Concentric Bass/Treble), which I find a lot more useful!
She's definitely an import (Ft. Worth address on the neck plate), and likely from the late 1980's, probably of Japanese manufacture.
I played her a lot in high school, though after a few moves and a few years of collecting dust in a closet, she could certainly use a professional setup. I'm not quite sure yet, but I have lately been briefly entertaining the notions of putting her up for sale... |

that is far from stock, regardless of what was in there when you got it.
I tried to lighten the picture up as much as I could to look at the knob placement.
what you have is a 87 model 1b, that someone added a J pickup, a bridge, added the 3rd knob, and messed up the alignment on the neck so the strings are off center.
The neck alignment is an easy fix, but that is far from "stock"
here is a stock 1b ( the only unit that came with a maple FB. )
.

I guess that makes sense, since, as you pointed out, the knob placement is very different from the other Charvel PJ's we've seen so far in this thread.
Anyway, the only thing *I've* done to it was have the BTC pre-amp installed. It came with a volume and tone, with a 3-way pickup selector switch where I had that bass/treble control installed. Everything else (including the EMG pickups and Schaller bridge) was there when I bought it back in 1998.
*shrug* Well, anyway, thanks for the info! This has been my primary bass for more than a decade now, and I'm glad I finally know what it is!
Again, I've contemplated selling this bass, but I've also been entertaining another option that I was afraid to mention earlier, due to the "travesty" of it...
I've been considering ordering a metallic black cherry-finished poplar body from Warmoth with this shape:
I'm considering a new body since, as you pointed out, I have to get the neck shift fixed anyway, and I would like a body that has a 9V battery box installed, since the rear control plate is getting a little loose, with the screws getting a little stripped from having to take them out to put a new battery in. Plus, I think it would look absolutely KILLER with that pointy Charvel headstock!
I consider this "modification" less of a travesty now that I know my bass has already been extensively-tampered with. |

that burgundy body would look great with a maple FB pointyhead! |

I've been playing it in its current condition since I bought it. The shifted neck hasn't really affected playability all that much, although I don't do anything crazy with the bass-- I've used it primarily for basketball pep band back in college, and some fundraiser galas in recent years.
