Finally a club I am worthy to join. Can't read music, I suck at slapping and can't tap. I only rise to mediocrity when I play with a great drummer. Somehow my stingray 5 fretted and fretless and my marcus miller5 don't help me play better, somehow my shuttle 9.0 and my Bergantino cabs don't make me sound better. At least my large pedal board muddles my sound. I hope the new Ric I ordered solves all my problems but I am not betting on it. Can I have a number please?

Sarcastic humor doesn't translate well on the interwebs. But if you look at the guy's profile he has a whole lotta pricey gear. I think he's joking.

But if he isn't, there's always the Awesome Bassists with Crappy Equipment club...

Personally I am actually thinking of upgrading to the Mediocre Bassist with expensive gear club. After our last show I got a lot of personal kudos from people who's judgement I do admire.

I would never make such a move based on my own opinion of course.

This is one of those threads that REALLY makes me want to get practicing. I get this nagging feeling that I'm gonna be here pretty soon.

Love the story about not telling the wife the price. I was out with a friendand our wives when his wife told me he'd just bought some great new equipment. Knowing this was top class stuff and uber expensive, I asked what he'd shelled out for it. Oh, the great thing is, says his wife, he got if for only $200. Knowing it had to be $600, of course I promptly wrote and gave him a cheque and asked if he could call in at the shop and get me one as well. Oh yes, says his wife, You can get that for Chris can't you? Give me the cheque and I'll bank it.

He was giving me that look! When our wives when off to the bathroom, he became what I can only call "excited"!

That's correct.

You know, I'm just tired of all that emoticon stuff - language is more exciting, if you are ironic without those emoticons....

Mmmmmmh, I forgot something: ;-)

Greetz from germany

PS: some of my former equipment was expensive, some not.
I found out that I "burned" a lot of money by buying expensive equipment.
I'm happy with my Squier now - it's o much better than a lot of guitars and basses I played in the 70s and 80s, which was more expensive. We're so lucky to get high qualitiy instruments for less money today.

I remember a time when I felt guilty for having a few grand worth of gear (two Carvin basses and a mostly Carvin amp stack), despite my mediocrity.

Now I've added a Gibson Flying V bass, a nice Gold Tone ABG, a second Carvin amp head, a MarkBass 4x10, and several pedals, with a custom Zon Vinny on the way -- and I've never felt better! Still mediocre, but at least I'm gigging regularly with all this gear...

You are probably right...If he is playing short scale regularly I am thrilled. Since "discovering" short scale bass, I found a sound that I love with a more easily played instrument. More easily played perhaps, but not by me of course since I am a member in good standing of this club.

What kind of short scale are you playing?

I've been playing for about 11 years now never taken a lesson (except of the life variety) and after a lot of hard work i think I've finally made it to this prestigious club. So i Zach Pappas, hereby proclaim myself quite possibly the crappiest Bass player with the finest rig a goomba could ever own. Behold the brown note temple: Click image for larger version

Paul McCartney pays a short scale off the peg Hofner?

I've played one for those violin basses in the 60s and they were the same level as other European stuff - nothing much like the real deal from Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, and Rickenbacker. Bet its not an off the peg bass by now. If I was a billionaire I could afford to get one modified to work way better and still look the same. Or am I just being cynical?

Oh, man. This truly is for me. I'm on the "better" side of crappy. I can't wait until I save up to buy an Eccleshall and join. The problem is he'll probably retire or die before that happens and therefore disqualifying my eligibility in the club.

I'm crappy enuf, but you guys will have to tell me if my gear qualifies. I have a Spector Legend 5, and an Eden Metro Combo...plus I just pulled the trigger on a G&L M2500 Tribby.

What you give up in expense for each bit, you can make up in volume. You just need 37 Squiers. Since you are a master burglar, you could steal 'em. I'm not sure that counts, but who is counting anyway?

I've never had a lesson, can't read music, don't know any scales (despite the fact people tell me I'm playing them all the time), But I know dang near every rock and roll song that was ever played on the radio, (except Rush and Steely Dan). The bass players equivalent to Dustin Hoffman in the Rain Man.

I do feel guilty. I'm gigging almost every weekend and turning down work while bassists who actually practice and have degrees in bass psychology are at home catching up on their soap operas.

That said, I have three Spector Euro LX's, a Fender Jazz American Deluxe and a fake Hofner Beatle Bass, (Epiphone). Bergantino AE410 and AE210 and a pair of Limited Edition Markbass Little Marks, (a 2008 and 2013).

The fact that people think I'm good because I have good equipment has caused me a great deal of anguish and guilt. I can only bluff for so long and it won't be long before I'm found to be the fraud that I am.

I guess I could start a 96 Tears tribute band.
