jhjhj,hj,hj,h, | Cool. I also have both a '72 and a '78 P and the difference in weight is staggering.

I just started playing again after 3 months on the DL post shoulder surgery. Ouch. It sucks to play right now but glad to be back..photo color is off, the RW is much more faded than the CV.

My first 'real' Fender - I've played Yamaha's and Warwick's for the last decade, but I've grown out of the hi-fi, 'cut through the mix' sound and really just want to sit nicely in the mix these days.
I'm thinking of dropping in some Quarter Pounders or Model P's, and swapping the bridge for a Gotoh 201 - based on what I've read here, they're pretty much the standard upgrades needed to get the most out of this bass. I've got a set of La Bella Jamerson's to put on as well. Should be sweet! Pics later |

The DiMarzio Model Ps have been around forever... for a reason. They are the P bass sound, but better. I went through 9 sets of pickups before I settled on these, some of which cost twice as much, and the DiMarzios sit in the mix better than the rest. I haven't used the Gotoh bridge, but have heard good things about it. I use a Hipshot A Style bridge, and am just ecstatic with it. Remember, though, that there aren't huge tonal differences between bridges. You should really only think of a bridge change as cosmetic.
Best of luck with your new P, and remember, if you don't have pictures, it didn't happen! |

About the bridge though, my understanding is that the stock MIM bridges are pretty lightweight, and that a higher-mass bridge will do good things for intonation and sustain. But that said, if I play it for a while and neither of those things turn out to a be a problem, I'll just leave it stock. |

My point is that (for most people) you'll never hear the difference. If you are having trouble intonating correctly, then by all means get a different bridge. If you change your strings a lot, get a top loader/ez loader. |

Anyway, can I get a number?

I have always ended up with Jazz basses for some reason. Not down on Jazz basses though obvioulsy! I just always wanted a precision. I like the heavier bridge they are using. |

I wish fender made more P/J combos and included passive basses in the American Standard line. While I am wishing.. They could make the controls stacked. VT - VT (passive).
I would love to hear that thing.
