MIJ Classic Series '70s P bass. Polite thunder. Very well mannered, full of tone and easy on the eyes. Vintage frets on J neck with 1.5" nut. She is teaching me how to play. This is love.

Already have a number, thanks.
Same as mine, but are you sure its J neck with 1.5" nut ?
I have a 2005 MIA Jazz also and the 2 necks are chalk and cheese.
The Fender website says 1.625" at the nut ?
Do love the vintage frets though and the great tone.

Thanks for your love for my bass. One day I will show these posts to my wife who has no idea on the goldmine I am strapping on when I play.

Fuhgeddaboutit. I have a Lakland 5502 with a pretty quilted top, a sweet P and a spalty Sadowsky that my wife picked out the top for, and she still doesn't want to hear it when I get started on basses.

"Chalk and cheese"!? Love it.

The two MIJs look like twins, same bound neck, no obvious difference to gross inspection or noticeable difference while playing. Re-measured both the P and the J to be sure. (The MIM P is up in the music studio and could not be reached for comment this morning.)

MIJ P: Nut and fretboard width exactly 1.5"; total width of neck at the nut from outer edge to outer edge of binding 1.625"; string spacing E to G is 1.125" on center.

MIJ J: Nut and fretboard width 1.375"; total width of neck at nut from outer edge to outer edge of binding 1.5"; string spacing E to G is 1.125" on center.

Sure enough, the MIJ P has a slightly wider nut and neck than its sibling, but never noticed while playing because the string spacing is the same.

The Fender website does say nut width = 1.625" for this Classic Series P bass. IIRC, my 1998 MIM P does have a wider nut and wider string spacing. And my recollection of the MIM J that I had briefly is that it had the same 1.5" nut width that I just reported for the MIJ P. But now you have me wondering!

I'm thinking about adding a J pickup to my MIA standard, with SPB-3 and SJB-3. Any thoughts on this?

My only reservation is the looks.

I would never route my MIA. If I owned a Mexi, yes.

I don't wear lenses, I have very pale blue/grey eyes, I think they look like that cause the way the light was shining on them through the window.
