I think that's called "charcoal frost" (the modern version, not the greenish thing from the sixties)

Had some chrome covers and thumbrest screwed into the American P-bass. After putting them on my MIM, i found that it was MORE comfortable with them on, so here we are!

Surprisingly, at yesterday's practice I also found that my palm was resting on the chrome cover on my 1974. it's definitely staying on.

...and, as I suspected, the long hiatus from P-bass really opened my ears back to appreciating the classic tone I get from this beast...

They enhance tone, also.

Actually, if he finds the bass more comfortable to play with the covers, they probably DO.

Actaully on my '78 P, I had a slight hum coming from it. When I finally put some replacement pickup covers on it, the hum when away. This has some truth to it in my case.

Haha very true. ITs funny, i always played directly over the pickup with my thumb anchoring on it as well. When i tried the chrome covers, i found i could get reasonably similar tone by anchoring my thumb on the end of the thumbrest and pluck right next to the chrome cover.

The real advantage came when i realized i could also anchor my thumb on the chrome cover itself, and pluck on the other side of the cover (between the the pickup and bridge) to get "tighter" tone, which comes in handy at times. And of course, the thumbrest allows for plucking all along the string from pickup to neck.

In the end, i found the covers and thumbrest allow you to easily change the tone of the P-bass on the fly by enabling you to pluck at different point on the string. Plus, they look awesome.

Have I posted mine in here yet? I don't think so... Anyways, it's a bit of a mutt... 1992 MIK Squier body with an AVRI pickguard, SPB-1 pickups, and an Allparts 21-fret neck. The neck is unbelievable, and the sound is classic Precision. Picked up this guitar in stock form for $100 a while back and I've been gradually molding it to my liking.
