Best Bass gear has one of my reviews on their site for this experience.
I wish that the MTD guys would just put a better pre-amp in the Heir. If it had sounded as good as the other 5 string I demoed it against, I would have chosen it. Another $100 to $200 wouldn't have killed me.

The Pickups have more to do with the overall sound of the stock bass than the preamp. I don't know of any import bass that comes with american made Barts. If there is one its probably over 2 grand new.

The KZX5 uses American made Bart's and pre and my Mk.1 Saratoga 5 did and those where custom made for that model. It looks like the AG does too. Mike sourced cheaper electronics to keep the price down. The Kingston line would be a bit more expensive.

Have a good conversion harness at home - just don't want to fry the board on my stock KZ (second is hot-rodded).

I know - can do with a tube-mp or avalon, but trying to keep crap out of my already over-loaded racks....
I upgraded to 18v on both my KZ & KZX basses...it's alright, go for it!! (If you haven't already that is!!)

Are the dimensions and feel the same.? You switched from rosewood fingerboard to rosewood? Does it sound different?

The old neck had a stuck truss rod and MAJOR dead spot issues. I called Dana and they said they had a "kingston" neck in stock. It turned out to be the KZX neck. It makes the original korean neck feel like a twig about to snap. The KZX neck is beefy, probably the closest to an american MTD neck as i've felt. Did it change the sound? Considering the old neck had a dead "area" from the 6-10th frets, i would say yes, the sound has definitely changed! There is more definition to the notes, and they just ring fuller.

Yeah, not a maple fan here... rosewood to rosewood..

Thank you! I had to get that stock chrome off of it as quick as I could, lol.

The Barts were a huge improvement. I would still like a bit more punch and growl, so maybe someday I'll go active.

This is my first MTD and so far I'm pretty damn impressed. It's beautiful and it sounds great.

Here she is......my oooooold, roadworn axe. We've been through a heck of a lot these last ten or so years...shows, long nights playing scales in small rooms, hitchhiking all over Alaska, New York, et al. ... Got the Bartolini last year, certainly a major improvement. The D and G strings are actually audible in the mix now! Been through THREE barrel jacks this year...any ideas on something else entirely to replace? At this point rerouting and going with another style jack entirely is not out of the question...anybody else with some experience here?

Believe what you are looking at is the original Kingston Model. Have been around for what seems like at least 7 years or perhaps more - and this is must be one of the originals, or close to it.

Have never owned one - But have been told for a passive instrument they have great "growl" and a very meaty tone thanks to the huge MM style P/U. Am looking for one myself in "lefty" - hard to find!

I had a passive 5 and it did have a nice growl (regretted selling that one).
