I've only had it for a few months, but I really like it. I use the P-bass model more than anything, but I like having the other models available. I have a Thumb BO 6, and I can tell you that the Thumb model is very good. I would also say that some of the models can sound a little "processed" when you play the bass by itself, but that disappears in a band situation.
In terms of strings, I'm currently using Dean Markley SR2000's, and I'll probably keep using them. I've used them in the past on some other basses, and I really like them.

I finally got a chance to run it thru my effects and man oh man I love it.

I got it used (damaged low B tuning peg - tunes quite right for B but can't tune up from low B...) anyway i simply LOVE the sounds! The Rick and Thunderbird emulation are PERFECT, though I'm not amazed by j and p bass. But they've managed to mimic upright and acoustic nicely - when played correctly (try playing upright emulation above 12th fret with thumb and a *touch* of palm muting - you'll know).
All in all it's definetly worth the money for all the sounds, and it's constantly inspire to play more and more (thru PodX3 and set of headphones for me).
BTW can I have a #? |

I've tried a few others but keep coming back to this one. I have it strung with DR Black Beauties. |

I do like the tone of the DR Black Beauties on my Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V and Fender Precision basses, plus I like the longevity of the coated strings and just the general feel and tension of the DR BBs. They are not that expensive and last a long time for me, so I am fine with having them on the Variax also because they give me that consistent feel and tension from bass to bass.

i'll post a pic of mine. someday. maybe.

Another Variax 705 user in sunburst (I gather about 3 were sold in the UK so it's special...) I use it in parallel with an Ibanez throughneck 5 string which seems to cover all the basses. It seems to respond well to extreme smiley-face EQ which, on a good day, can find the resonant frequency of the room.
All the best,
Ian |
