While I've owned a black Variax for a couple of years, I haven't used it much yet. I've thought of putting the electronics in a different bass but never got 'round to it.

Thanks.

Warmoth makes replacement bodies and necks for the Variax guitar but not basses (link to Warmoth Variax page) so apparently for basses it's a custom proposition as in your link.

I just bought another 705 on ebay. Black one. One odd thing is that it has a red thumb rest. The seller says it's original, and it looks original, but I've never seen one like that. I'll know more when I have it in my hands.

Got this reply from Line 6

Hello,

This was sent to you via the other support ticket:

"Hello,

The part number for what we call the "coffin assembly" aka everything in the case under the pickguard is 50-04-0015. Retail price is $200. If you are seriously considering getting this part, I recommend you act fast as we only have 1 left.

The jack plate assembly is part# 50-04-0181-4. Retail price is $30.

Both of these parts can be ordered from Full Compass at 1-800-476-9886.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Neal
Line 6 Parts"

Best regards,

Line6Hugo

I think I'm better off just buying another bass and have all of the parts.

You can add me as well.
I had a 705, bought at blow-out-the-discontinued-price, a few years back but it got sold to help pay for son's college. I did like it but $$$$ were needed FAST then.

I bought a 4 string sunburst here on TB last week, got it Monday, but gigged last night and am working on 4-1/2 hours of sleep so it hasn't been run thru an amp yet. Tomorrow night it will get Straplocs, new strings, the thumb rest thing removed(don't like 'em, YMMV), set up, and played for a couple of hours.

Thanks!
I. R. Tired

PS: I'll also be making an Eneloop battery pack to put in it because I can(BSEE) and because I don't buy regular batteries(cells) anymore. Line 6's forum indicated that 7 AAA's in series works(7 x 1.2 volts = 8.4 volts...a bit short of the 9 volts). If you go 8 AAA's you're at 9.6 volts and if I go there it will only be because the Line 6 engineer(s) tell me in writing that it will not hurt the circuits. My experience is slightly lower is better than higher because circuit designs NOW usually get the bare minimum and some components are "not great" quality. Seen this in multi-thousand dollar scale control systems here where a power supply capacitor cratered because the circuit WAS DESIGNED to run it very close to it's max allowable voltage rating. Somebody saving money in the wrong place. I replaced the cratered one with one of about 2.5 times the max voltage it could see and it's been running now since 1995.

Hello everyone!

I am a lucky owner of a Variax 705 Sunburst, an exceptional instrument.

Although I am not really a bass player (my main instrument is the saxophone), I had always liked these basses, but were very expensive for a saxophonist who only wanted a bass for fun.

Initially I bought a very rare bass, a Riverhead Unicorn RUB-1090 4 strings, that helped me to get started, but that was not in very good condition, with very high action, and very noisy pickups.

Asking in a forum about repairing my Riverhead, I came across an ad from a professional bass player who wanted to sell quickly his Variax 705 to buy another bass. This man already had another 7 or 8 basses, so he did not need something like the Variax 705. As he was in a hurry to sell it, I got it for a incredibly good price, along with a Bass Pod XT.

Compared to my spoiled Riverhead Unicorn, I felt the 705 as a high-quality instrument. But undoubtedly his best quality is the sound, and the absence of noise.

And the story did not end here .. I really liked the bass, but I did not like the sound of the Bass Pod XT, so I sold it and bought a secondhand Pod X3 Live. Then, also bought a Variax 700 guitar (amber) second hand, to have full trio.xD
This led me to resell the X3 live and buy the new Pod HD500. With this pedal I'm really happy with the sound, finally. Its bass amp simulation of a Ampeg Portaflex is simply spectacular. It is an amplifier that can also be used with guitar (combined with the Blackface Deluxe Reverb) to get a good jazz dark tone.

Well .. This is the story of my 705, an instrument that I really appreciate and I'd like it to last a lifetime.

MODJ

GREEN based on 2004 Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass.
Not content with what many already considered
perfection, Fender introduced the Deluxe Modern
Jazz Bass. With a smaller body, extra frets, and active
EQ, the Deluxe Jazz combines modern features with
classic Jazz Bass style.

I usually add a touch more bass with the blend knob in the center.
