Thanks for the kind words anyway! |
sorry to sound so critical!
on a positive note, though, this was the bass i used to obsess over when i was a kid. i had an ad that i tore out of a bass player mag or something. i even had a warwick catalog that i used to read and look at over and over.
so, in other words, the FNA was where my love for warwick started!

I have no evidence of this besides my own experience with this particular bass, so take what I am about to say with a grain of salt, but with the g string in opposite way the g string stays in tune longer than the other strings (especially the b string). Probably an anomaly, but still pretty cool |

Playing this bass in Church Should require Confession/Absolution! A Bart preamp might go better with those pickups than the Aggie. Or up the Pups to Nordies!
I just made payment on a 6er Proline in Ocean Blue. I'll post pics once it gets here. Stock MEC pickups/preamp.

Is the higher price tag justified or it's all about the romance of the older stuff that feels different?

Some people prefer that, and since those aren't in production anymore it puts a premium on the used ones. Other than that, some of the older ones had different electronics (not MEC) from the factory, but I haven't seen that really play into the value a whole lot.

| | Marco Bass Endorser Endorsing Artist: Marco Bass Guitars | | | | | Some had different woods but largely the same from 80s to 1997 other than the dolphin and ss1 bodies. Wenge was used and brass hardware. I love my 1988 thumb. Got it for a steal though. |

I just traded in a Warwick Corvette Standard (an 2004 German one, not the new korean made). I played a '97 Corvette exclusively for a few years in the early 2000's, so when I picked this one up I knew exactly what I was dealing with.
The neck is a tad slimmer, or it's just that it's really smooth compared to my previous one's Ovankol (IIRC) neck and that's about it. The growl is there (I did not realize how much I missed that..), the same workhorse/bulldozer feeling is there.
To tell you the truth, I'm a gearaholic and have moved a lot of instruments & gear throughout the years.. but I haven't been this excited about a bass for a while. So this trade: epic win.

| | The Sound of Wood! Warwick & Framus Social Media | | | | | Starting again in 2013, most Warwick basses made in Germany are going back to using Wenge necks, and all Warwick basses made in Germany have milled brass bridges. All of our wood choices are nearly identical to the earlier basses, and we air-dry all of the wood for a minimum of 3-5 years, usually longer. MEC electronics have been used as standard since 1984, and MEC pickups have been used as standard since 1988. In our opinion, the instruments we are currently producing are the highest quality we've ever produced, especially since 2012, with even more improvements for 2013. Thanks! |

| | Marco Bass Endorser Endorsing Artist: Marco Bass Guitars | | | | | Warwicks are consistently good. They use crazy precision and make some of the best basses in the World. The old stuff was less consistent and their measures seem to be more strict now. To me the only reason I go for older wicks is wenge and slimmer necks. They have remedied that for me. Love me some Warwick growl. |

I know they switched to the thinner neck profile a few years back (which feels great), and now with the switch to wenge for necks in 2013 onward, are these new neck profiles identical to the pre-ovangkol (with thicker D profile) necks they used to make? Or are they tweaked (excluding the steel inserts, which I believe were not installed in the original wenge necks...or am I mistaken in that assumption?)
Also, do you know which models are sticking with ovangkol? Or is ovangkol gone, and it's only the models with other woods like maple? (even though I noticed the SSI got rid of the maple neck for wenge...and looks absolutely amazing for it!)
