Subscribed!!! Just put DR Green Neon strings on my Sonus...looks AMAZING!!! Will post pictures soon...:bassist::bassist::bassist: |
This thread needs some more good ol' Zon porn to start it off. Since I'm still in the throes of new love with this one, I'll post it again. ![]() ![]() I really need to take some new pics now that all the knobs match :-) |
Not to try and derail from the current Zon porn, but does anyone have experience with both the Legecy and Sonus basses? I'm wondering which has the smaller body (for an equal number of strings). |

2 Attachment(s) Here's a little lefty Zon Sonus love.. Joe builds a great lefty bass as well.... Can I get a number too? |
1 Attachment(s) If they're still handing out numbers, I deserve one in the first whatevers. My first Zon is still the one I have now as home wood shedding froth. Built 2002. Acquired 2006. Bass NW did NOT know what they had when they sold this to me. But the irony is, I still don't know what this is, precisely. It's custom, but it's not a Custom. With ZB4.3, but with 17mm spacing and 34" scale, the best I can figure, against current models, is that this is a fretless slap monster with spacing and string length not designed for slap. That is, the only other Zon beasts that have ZB4.3 are 35" scale with 19mm spacing, but this is 34" scale with 17mm. spacing. And fretless. Zon did service on the fretboard after I bought it, and fact is, chances are extremely high that this is my gig monster for the coming few days or weeks as I wait for my Barker on some regular service at Gryphon Strings in Palo Alto. It's gonna blow some minds big time when I show up with this. This all said, I'm maxed out on images. I don't know how to link to a pic that I've already uploaded to TB. Will try to figure it out. EDIT: OK, figured out graphics upload. Now, Angus, Vic, or someone, can YOU tell me what this is? Narrow bars. ZB4.3. 17m spacing. 34" scale. Good luck. All I can figure is I love this, and it's time to share the love. |
It's a Sonus Standard 5 with slightly different preamp chosen. There are tons and tons of basses that don't fit their normal listed specs because he builds what people ask for. I wouldn't get too hung up on the name. It's pretty! I've seen gravesbass's bass in person before- it's one of my favorites, even if it was accidentally made backwards. :D I'll take some more pictures of mine when I get back to Seattle. I'm due to for some real pictures of my katalox 5 string. |
Thank you, thank you. There is a bass instructor in Kansas that specializes in playing 34" scales with ZB4.3, but I can't recall his name. Anyway, it's not the absolute prettiest spalted Zon I've seen. It's those 45-degree angled lines across the bass of the horn that remove 100% for me, but would I buy this again? @#$% yes. Looking forward to your pics. And by the way, you know more about Zon than many dealers. And this specific beast was displayed for YEARS on the website of BassCentral (or whatever) as a sample of Zon, until they took the pic down when I started talking about it. Dealers LURK, big time. So she's a showgirl, even with minor room for improvement. Best I can figure, I am nearly 100%-certain that I am the second owner. I pity the first for having given this up. But I do know for a fact the first owner played this fairly well. Took some fretboard treatment to get her back to smooth. Sooner or later, Joe will be putting an unlined neck on this for me. Anyway, thanks. |

The SF Bay area is in for some serious beckoning for a gathering. Seriously. To include Mr. Manring. And Joe himself. Thing is, I don't own a car, but I can bring at least one Zon to this mix (shown above), and if Bartolini gets their sh#t together, a couple of new Vinnies to the mix as well... |

I use DR Highbeams on my Custom Sonus 6. In other news, my VB6 is having its nut slotted and is about to be strung up. |

I truly loved that spalted / flamed top combination. I`ve never played a better fretless in my life, but was too much bass for me :( |

I picked that bass personally 3 years ago in NYC. I played it quite a bit and recorded some tracks but didn`t give it the time it deserved and recently went to better, more professional hands. I gotta admit I miss it :( |
