OK, how about this design?

Interesting.

Good luck with not having that lower horn snap off. Displays a certain lack of concern for the properties of wood.

Also kinda square edged and clunky

The top section over the fret board would get in the way if you use "thumb over" technique, which I do sometimes, and in the section the fret board is joined to the body. Other than that, it shows a lot of artsy design quality. On Facebook, where I found the photo, a person said...

"I tried it a the music fair in Frankfurt last year - its really amazing. The whole thing is vibrating!"

Also, this is pretty nice...

And this, a favorite of mine...

Woah, is the 2nd picture is this thread some kind of moveable/sweepable pickup design? Would love to try that!

Yeah, I think so; more or less a "manual" tone control I guess you would call it. Really unique idea.

What benefits from having a moving pickup?

I'm just wondering if you would knock it around at all when playing? Would it stay in place?

Tone variance I think. A difference way to do it.

mcblahflooper94 03-16-2013 08:01 AM

One question: why?

The designer might ask why not?

Because it's not ergonomic, it looks ugly to most people, and if it was mine I'd worry the lower horn would break off any second.

I could Google it, Google images I guess, but I don't know the name or brand. I'll look around.

A moving pickup = tonal variation. Years ago I had a Westone Rail bass that had a sliding pickup. You have to actually hear it to completely believe how much difference pickup position makes. I'm surprised more luthiers haven't experimented with it. This "windshield wiper" design is a very elegant solution.

Yea, but why not be adventurous? Some people would think that musicians would be some of the least conformist people.

Personally, the first pic would not be my first choice. If someone insisted on making one for me, I would ask that they at least soften the edges for actual playing comformt.

The Spalt and the KR are interesting and nice. The original pic, not so much.
