It's still made of wood, metal, and paint just like a modern Fender P, it's just old. Go buy an Alleva Coppolo for a fraction of the price and you'll get a better built bass than any old Fender. Jimmy uses only the finest aged woods, old fret wire, and custom wound p'ups.

These are my thoughts, not yours.
so aged wood and old fretwire are what make an AC better than a vintage Fender that is made of old wood and old fretwire?

I've had nothing but good luck buying and selling from CL because unlike E-Bay or any online purchase, TB included, you can actually put your hands on and test what you are potentially buying. Generally you go to their homes to see the items, that nips the scam problem in the bud.

CL and online scam stories get way out of hand IMO. Tens of thousands of items are bought and sold every day without incident, you just hear about the one time it goes bad.
With almost every CL ad you will get several scam emails. CL deserves the bad rep it gets. You can't buy sight unseen on CL. As such, you can't expect to get the best price for what you're selling. Additionally, you won't find much in the way of rare or obsure items, either.

If CL started charging for their classified ads, they'd be out of business in a week.

It looks legit...but way expensive.

The controversies regarding 'is it original'? Is it worth X(?) are fun to comment on.

With Fender makin' 'em so nice these days for around a $1000 makes for a terrific value without the worries of originality or some hack job done under the PG in the '70's.

Like most folks, I love to look at them too but, having my choice, I prefer to run the rack and/or order one straight from the factory that no one else has pawed up.

CL is regional, may be people are like that where you live but you can not judge the whole country by how the people are in your area.

Yes you do get some BS e mails. You also get some BS PM's from people here trying to low ball you.

As far as not getting the best price, you are crazy.
I sold my '85 Ric on CL for $1500. It sold in one week. I got the money in cash.
If I had sold it here, I doubt I would have got the $1500 for it and if I did I would have only pocketed may be $1400 after shipping and transaction fees.

As far as buying gear, I have gotten better deals on CL then I would ever get anywhere else. You have to be on top of it, have cash ready and be able to run out the door fast.
My favorite is just before the 1st of the month when bills are due. Collage kids will sell off gear that daddy bought them for penny's on the dollar just to get some fast cash.

As for rare or obscure items. We get plenty of them here too. Last summer there was a real nice Ritter Roya that sold in 3 day for $4500. I see a lot of nice things.
Here are just a couple thing that have been listed recently here.
This isn't a bad price, may be if he is cool and you have cash you could get him down a little.

This one is a dealer but not to bad of a price

Check this smoking deal out

That is actually mine. I could probably get that price here but after shipping and fees what would I pocket and what kind of hassle would be involved?

I don't know if it is a scam, but the guy is really dreaming about the price. I recently helped a friend sell his grandfather's all original '59 P that had been used for only 2 years and stored the rest. Many of you here helped me with the authentication. It took more than 3 months and we finally settled for around $8,000. I even advertised in in Nashville and NYC. The market is just too soft now.

There, fixed it. Ebay's scam stories are what get out of hand - people living in the age 10-15 years ago when Ebay was terribly under-regulated. Passing stories and hypotheticals around left and right still after all these years. I've sold and purchased something like 5000 items on Ebay - sold all sight-unseen and purchased all sight unseen (probably 1000 instruments at this point) and never once been scammed. Although, I believe I've foiled a few instances of buyers trying to scam me...

Craigslist is intentionally under-regulated. One could just as easily get robbed when they went to view the instrument. There goes that "going to see it nips the scam in the bud" theory.

But I digress on that debate. From an objective general standpoint, CL is far more risky for buying or selling than Ebay is. Although, with knowledge one can avoid about 99% of any scams from either site. CL is just more straightforward whereas Ebay takes more know-how to navigate.
