It would have to have:
-2 single coils (jazz bass type)
-active /passive 2 band minimum
-34"
-ebony fingerboard / I can deal with rosewood
-min. 18 mm string spacing at bridge

If I had to say one it would be an Adamovic Saturn 5 with single coils.

Everybody knows that the universal answer to everything is 42, not 41

On topic: I own 5 basses and I use them all. It depends on the mood I'm in, and what sound I want at that particular time.

to me things where easier when I didn't the means to own several basses, I owned one bass and did everything with it, trying to get the best out of my instrument and myself.

though, today I'm not that far, I have a Pbass and a jazz.

I'm in the same boat as a lot of guys. I play a lot of different music between 3 bands, and I love having basses that are so far apart sonically, different makers, different wood, different neck dimensions, different string orientations ect.. There is something to be said for "sounding like you"...and you'll pretty much succeed every time at that, but I feel like I want basses that I almost need to adjust to every time so that I don't get stuck in a playing rut, playing all the things I usually play. What happens when I add a high C on 5 string instead of a low B, or use an acoustic fretless, or forget the B string altogether and decide to just use a 4 string? My sound changes yes, but more importantly what I do on a given bass changes how I approach everything. It keeps me learning and growing, and that's groovy!

I'm only about halfway there.

If money was'nt an issue, I would get a P, a J and a MM. It would cover all the tones I like.

Or a PJ and a MM.

At one time I've owned 8 basses (ALL EBMM). Each had their own place, but really were very similar. I had the means to afford them, but hit hard times, and sold them all.

I now have 2 basses, and could really get by with just one, but I like the differences they each bring.

Depends on the project, i have a couple Basses that are my staples, they usually get played at the audition and i find as the sound of the band develops i buy a Bass best suited for it, they are sold once the i have moved on to another project but the staples stay.

If I had to have it all in one, I'd put a SGD wide aperture in the neck slot, a reverse P in the standard P position, and a MM triple coil in the standard MM position. Then I'd use a 5-position Strat switch that would give (1) neck, (2) neck with MM single coil, (3) P, (4) P with MM single coil, and (5) MM (both coils). I'd add 2 extra jacks for stereo out (a Rick-O-Sound and an Alembic XLR), and I'd still be short several good sounds.

I currently own and use just one bass, my Fender P. It is all I need, however the idea of having something as a backup just just just in case is never a terrible idea though

This 1991 american Fender Prodigy (P/J use to be active I changed that) got me through 10 years of every style from Metal to Jazz:

I use my 2001 MIA Fender passive Hot Rod P for everything. I love that bass. I do have a Squire P for when I leave my go to at rehersal studio or if I need the other to go to the doctor.

I couldn't do without both fretless and fretted, but otherwise it seems possible. Just not desirable.

I'm pretty content with just my Jazz bass for now because it will do a lot, but at some point, I really would like to add a Precision as well. I couldn't see myself owning more than three or four at most any way. Ultimately, I would like to have a Jazz, a Precision, and a fretless J or P.

Just one Alembic for me. I just wish my car was as nice as my bass. Two kids in college will do that to a man!

I have one bass per continent, heh. One back home, one in the States. Plus I paid for half of a custom made bass back home, so I guess I have one and a half

Needing more than one bass depends on the situation. Wishing more than one bass depends on you.

I have one B206. The range is nice but it has a unique feel, is huge, and the balance is hard to work with. Soon enough ill have another. Not sure which but its probably going to be totally different. I don't think I'd want too many but having choices is always great in music. I'm not even in a band but I love having different instruments to spend time with. It's a good way to keep an eye on how brands have changed through the years too.

I guess I could be happy with just one Dingwall, but I don't see myself going there for the forseeable future.
