I bounce around this idea all the time. Right now I'm 100% content to play my fretless 100% of the time... But that will likely change in a week.

I have 3 currently, but I've found over the years that the right 2 pickup, 5 or 6 string bass can get you through anything under the sun...It's all a matter of:
1) Pickup focus
2) Right and Left Hand technique
3) Rounds or Flats
4) Midrange freq and boost/cut

I have a modified Sadowsky Reverse PJ 5'er and it's worked wonders on everything I've thrown at it (on a regular basis: Classic and Modern R&B, Gospel, Big band Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Calypso, Salsa, Pop-Rock, Hip-Hop) so 99 times out of 100 I take nothing else with me...The 70's style Fender J (rounds) and the 80's Yamaha BB1600 (Flats) get used only for teaching, recording occasionally or just noodling around at home...not worth the few dollars to part with them

I do have a LGW Torzal 6 String on order that may give the Sadowsky a run for its money though...we'll see...

Nope. I am in a couple extremely different bands, original acoustic southern rock, and Latin jazz. And I am a busy sub in my area in many different situations.

Active 5er: Stingray 5
57 AVRI P-Bass w/ flats
Fretless stingray 4 (just in case)
Upright
Parts jazz
Kala U-Bass fretless

I play the U-Bass, upright, and P-Bass (in that order) 90% of the time. The SR5 is called for 9%. I like to have options, but they gotta be different. I think my collection covers it pretty well.

I'd love to be a "one-bass-guy". You know, those players that always play the very same bass, in every song, with every band?

Like if you think Jamerson, you think of The Funk Machine.
Well, I'd like to have my bass someday too.

Most likely it'll be a Fender P.

I only have one bass right now that I just love! But I'm thinking about building my next bass soon.

I used to have only one bass and it suited me fine.

Now with more budget I can have one with flats, one with a whammy bar, a Spector for unmatchable tone, a 4 string, a fretless, etc.
