Ordering Carvin - from Canada; any recent changes?
Just doing my pre-order research- could any Canadian who have ordered a Carvin bass recently (August 2013) tell me whether UPS brokerage is covered? I understand there is no import duty, and I'm also aware of the sales tax we have to pay in Ontario.
I read through this thread:
However, the current carvin website statement on Canadian shipments is this:
Carvin ships to Canada! Please note that Canadian customers are responsible for any import taxes or duty - the shipping charges you pay on Carvin.com just cover the shipping itself. UPS will contact you before delivery to tell you the import tax and duty amount due."
It doesn't mention the UPS brokerage fee. I called up Carvin today and talked to a very nice representative who said that Carvin doesn't collect/cover the brokerage fee any more (he also said he would confirm that and get back to me; I'm awaiting confirmation on this).
This worries me, as we are all aware of UPS' horrible brokerage charges.
ps if this is a redundant topic I apologize in advance- just trying to confirm if there have been any recent changes.
If this is the case, then prepare to remortgage your house to pay UPS.
UPS will charge their own brokerage, unfortunately.
Maybe you can sweet talk em into using US mail? Worth a shot, worst they can say is no....but man...those broker fee's make it a deal breaker for me.
UPS will charge you a brokerage fee, but you won't pay any duty if the product is made in the USA because of NFTA. You will pay the HST to the UPS driver upon delivery.
So I'm selling a bass on EBAY and someone asked about shipping from US to CAnada.... UPS says about $70. (its a $400 instrument) Insurance? tariffs?
I would NEVER EVER EVER buy another item of any kind from the USA if it was shipped UPS. They are the absolute worst for screwing Canadians on brokerage fees.
I have been burned too many times with these scumbags. Never again. Seriously, UPS brokerage fees could be as "low" as $75 or as high as $250 on a $1000-ish bass.
Do your homework. UPS brokerage fees are idiotic.
At a time when more American retailers are making it easier for Canadians to buy online & pre-pay all the fees (Borderfree & Ebay's Global Shipping Program are examplers). Carvin goes backwards & makes it more difficult, or at least more of a gamble - UPS has a horrible record when it comes to brokerage fees...
As others have stated, NAFTA takes care of any duty (Made in USA import to Canada) & hst or gst/provincial taxes are expected...
Too bad... I guess I won't have to visit the Carvin site as often...
Update- yes, the person I spoke to from Carvin confirmed that Canadians will have to deal with the UPS brokerage fees themselves.
To be clear, it's not that I expect Carvin to pay for my brokerage fees, but I hate the feeling of uncertainty surrounding the UPS brokerage charges. I don't want any surprises. I was all ready to order but for UPS.
Maybe I'll have to wait for a used Icon 6 that comes close to my specs....
