P Bass with thinner neck recommendations? I did a search and didn't find much help. Is there a P Bass with a thinner neck out there or would I need someone to make me a custom bass? The thinner the neck the better for me. (Thin or flat radiused either one.) |
Only P bass I can think of with a thinner neck is the Lakland Duck Dunn model. It's now the 44-64 Custom. They make it in both the US and Skyline series. Basically it's a P bass with a J neck. I have one and love it. If your reference to thin refers to thickness on the back side of the neck you could always have the neck shaved. |
The mark hoppus (of blink-182 fame) signature model is a fender jazz bass body and "maple neck with modern "C" shape and 1.625" nut width (wider than the 1.5" standard for Jazz Bass guitars)" with a p-bass pickup. Also I believe that the peavey fury (the p-bass one) is supposed to have a very thin neck. |

I put a Carvin neck on my Hoppus bass, and it's Uber good! |
I assume you mean a jazz neck with p bass pick up? Fender: Aerodyne Jazz Bass MIM Deluxe Active P bass Duff McKagan Sig Reggie Hamilton Sig and probably others I'm not thinking of. Also look at G&L SB-2 |
Or you could just buy a p bass body and a jazz neck off eBay and put them together. |
The new Nate Mendel has a narrower nut. Not quite a Jazz, but not a full P. http://www.fender.com/series/artist/nate-mendel-p-bass/ |

I second G&L. The SB-1 was a lot of P for the bass. I dunno about the SB-2... it's a P/J with no tone control. If you can find one (they're very rare) check out the G&L L-5000 - it's a 5-String SB-1 P-Bass. |
There are several on eBay right now. Search "Precision Bass Jazz Neck" |
Squier p-bass special- A pj with jazz width neck Peavey Fury- mid 80's to late 90's P with a jazz neck(typically maple neck) Peavey Foundation S- PJ with no pickguard and jazz width neck(typically rosewood fingerboard) Peavey Forum- 93/94 only(later model had humbucker(s), pj with jazz neck(rosewood fingerboard) |
my MIM p(2002?) has a relatively thin neck compared to the RW og a 51 for that matter.. |
Maybe a fender American special precision? |
My Fenders 70's Precision has a fairly thin neck, though not as thin as the Lakland Duck Dunn (which is a jazz neck) I had a couple years ago. |
I'm getting this end of this week not a jazz neck but thinner nut & thinner neck feels great in hand http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-A...59-i1723641.gc |
I am on a search for thin necked basses in general, but wanting the P sound for a specific band possibility. I have played and owned a Fury and a Foundation. Forgot about those two. The thinnest flattest neck possible would be great for me. Off to go look at some of the recommended basses. Keep up the helpful advice brother bass players. |
To the OP: just drop a Jazz bass "A" neck on it. Narrower necks will help achieve similar dexterity to thinner necks. Pick up a Jazz and see how it feels. |
So is an "A" neck their narrowest? I have found P bass necks especially to be too big for me. Jazz neck is okay, but I'd like something even thinner, but especially flatter. Someone above recommended getting the neck shaved. Never heard of this option before. Do all luthiers offer that as an option? |
Try early MIJ P basses most have awesome thin/flat necks. |
How early do you mean fellow Buckeye? ( I went to high school in Girard and Hubbard, up around you.) |
