P/J or '51 P?

So,

I have a nice Fender neck that's been unused for a few years now...

I have a very nice P and a very nice Jazz, so i'm trying to decide what Fender/Squier body i could add to this mix that will do something that these two don't.

Right now, i'm torn between a P/J and a '51 P. Any other suggestions?

Maybe an active P/J... but i really don't want to spend more than $200 for what i'm just considering a 'fun project'.

I would say 51....I guess it depends on what neck you have. Square vs rounded heel.

Ooooooh... good point... It's a rounded MiM Jazz bass neck... Are the Squier CV 51 P's compatible?

PJ is more versatile. My suggestion is whatever contrasts your gear more.

I had a 51 and dug it a lot although had some minor gripes. No contours, solo'd single coil is noisy, guitar-sized frets.

I don't like PJ as much as a '51, so I'd go for a '51.
It is my favourite 4 string format.

I like the '51 look...YMMV. You can also get a nice PU that isn't noisy.

If the hum from each single coil cancels the other out, this is the only choice!

The '51 has a distinctive headstock and the later, "Strat" head will look odd on a '51. If you're OK with that, Warmoth will build you a contoured '55 style body with the radiused neck slot.

I'm a little prejudiced: I have a CIJ Classic '51 RI that I love, but J basses do nothing for me. I also have a pair of split-coil Ps, but the '51 is the Thump King.

I once owned two Fiesta Red Classics (one tighter and stock, regularly tuned, the other, honestly not that precise, but with same Seymour Duncan SB3 Quarter Pound as yours and a full step downtuned)... I trust your opinions... You must really be a tone monster IMHO

So I get your point and, to OP DinWin I go "51 P my friend" not so happy with a Jazz bass neck but, heck: the bass' gonna be yours

Cheers,
Wallace

i had the fender classics 51 reissue. Sounded great with a pick and roundwounds too...dark and heavy and barking.

Thank you for the kind words! I flatter myself...a drummer told me, "I don't usually listen to bass players, but that orange bass is special." For what it's worth, I installed TI Jazz Flats on the advice of another TBer, and I'm very happy.

This may not be much help. I currently own both.
I love the feel and tone of the 51ri, but hate the noise from the single coil pup in some venues. The 51ri generates interest and gets positive comments for both look and sound.
The P/J is very versatile, works noiselessly in any venue, but looks like a standard run of the mill P to the casual observer and non-bassist. For me it is not an either / or choice, but an own and use BOTH life style.
