Just lost out on one of these. Peavey TL-5... I took to long investigating it. How is the weight on these and is the neck comfortable. It looks fairly big in the pics but I'm not sure. Does anyone have experience with them? Is the neck similar to a G&L L2500? How do they sound?
I had a 2nd Gen TL-Five. That means it had the VFL pickups, like a Cirrus. Not the Super Ferrite pickups like the 1st Gen that you snoozed on. ;-)
1st Gen is Active/Passive. 2nd Gen is Active only.
Mine sounded great! Very much like a Cirrus. I sold it and kept (at the time) a Cirrus 5 and a Peavey GV. The reasons the TL went are:
- it was a little heavy for my taste.
- I didn't like the neck as much as the Cirrus or GV.
I currently have a G&L L2500 (among others). I'd say the neck profiles are pretty similar. The TL neck seems closer to the G&L neck than to the Cirrus or GV. And, unlike the G&L, the TL neck did have that sticky feel that comes with being glossy.
]Here is my gen 2 Tl5
I bought it on eBay a few years ago. it had been stripped of the original blue colour and refinished quite nicely. Ive replaced the treble/bass pot but Peavey UK were unable to source me a mid/mid shift one which is still a bit flaky but useable. Not sure what Im gonna do once it gives up. Maybe a new preamp. Otherwise its a great bass, if a bit heavy and with quite a wide neck.
Sorry Cant work out how to upload image
