Pickguards choices....Help! OK, so I have more than a few “irons in the fire” I just bought a new rig, P-bass rebuild etc… So, might as well add one more. My Jazz bass needs a new pickguard…It’s not broken, nor does it need a new one, but when I ordered this one, it was listed as a “Red Tortoise Shell”….well, to me it looks more like lava, that’s not a bad thing, but I just don’t like it, and I’ve looked at it long enough. I’m having a tough time deciding on a new color, so I put a poll in this post with a some choices for you to choose from, if you can, post a pic! If you selected “other” please post a description (or a pic) of the pickguard you’d suggest. Thanks!! Here are a couple pics of the bass in question, I apologize for the flash, but it seemed the best way to show the true color of the pickguard and the bass, which is white, but not bright white, more “antique” or “egg shell”. ![]() ![]() |
If there's no exposed routing, leave it off. Otherwise the lavatort will do. |
Vintage white basses look great with brown tort... No offense, but that is the ugliest PG I have seen in a while... |

And yea, that pickguard definitely got hit by the ugly truck....then it backed over it and hit it again. :scowl: |
Anything but black pearloid! I voted Tort. |
I voted 'Other' Head to Warmoth's J Bass Pickguard Selector and check out Brown Shell, 3rd Column, 5th down. That's got my vote. |
I am trying to figure out what color bass that would look good on... Invisible maybe? |
Parchment, I like an all white bass but the straight white is to white for Olympic white.....or go flat black and go for a storm trooper look |

I do think she's beautiful just the way she is, tho. |

BROWN tort all the way. |
Yeah, that particular tort is pretty fugly, IMO - I have the same color scheme, and here are a few pics with different PGs on it: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
FWIW, I like the white pearl, followed by the abalone, then the tort, and white last... - georgestrings |
I think the only reason 'tort' wins here is because its definition is really stretched. Tort pickguard means a whole lot of completely different designs, so it ought to have the most votes, some like swirled, some like straightish design, some like red, some like brown, etc, so I voted white pearloid, I think that design looks really calming for some reason :) The reason I didn't vote for tort is that I see pickguard on my bass close up, and I hate the look of tort close up, looks great on stage though. |
A white bass is the only color where I would choose brown tort. |
