Pickup quality is related to volume? (VM vs. Gio)
When I got my Squier VM JAZZ, one of the things (among many) that I noticed was the higher output sound of it, when compared to the cheapo bass I had at the time. Even on the max volume of my 15W combo the cheapo wouldn't sound very loud. The VM does!
This week I brought home an Ibanez Soundgear Gio (PJ) from a guitarist friend of mine and I wasn't expecting much, being a low end budget line instrument. I tried to even the controls by putting both with the bridge J-pup only and turned the active boost on the Gio off. And what I hear is that the Gio has a higher volume than the Squier. The Squier has new bright strings and the Gio doesn't.
Now, should we say that this is surprising or normal? I mean, overall the quality and feel of the VM is way better than the Gio so I'm not feeling bad or anything, and I must say that the Gio gets noisy and I think I ear some distortion at higher gain/volume. But... should I feel disappointed that the VM doesn't deliver as much volume/attack as the Gio (even with the active boost knob turned off)?
Thanks in advance (from a guy who hasn't tried as many bass as he should have!)
