Pickup question effect sustain?... Woodshed!

Ok, so on all of your advice I have been woodshedding my new fret-less Kubicki about an hour and a half each day. But as I am playing I am starting to hear something that I don't really like. There is no sustain at all on my bass. But it really cuts out suddenly. There is no decay on the sustain it just kinda cuts out. The sound stops very suddenly.

Ok... so my setup... When I got the bass I put a new battery in the bass and I put new flat-wound strings on the bass and cleaned it. I also lowered the pickups so that they were both even and the distance to the strings were even. (I did this because I noticed that on one of the pickups there was wear from where the strings were rubbing on the top of the pickups.) I run compression in line but I also use the same compression on my other basses and this by far has the least amount of sustain.

My question is does pickup placement effect sustain? I mean it makes sense but I also wonder if there is another factor (no pun intended) at play here.

Thanks ahead of time for your advice.

turn off the compressor..

if you are looking to test or analyse something the rest of the system must be as simple as possible.. a compressor has a response with a knee in it, and the amp response above that knee is flatish, below that knee, falls rapidly.

My first guesses would be the compressor or the flats.
