My SX Jazz 5er is pretty unique now. The only remaining original parts are the body, neck and knobs. My luthier friend took off the horrible fake "vintage" finish on the neck, shaved it down a bit and gave it a nice thin satin finish. I also got him to put in Hipshot tuners, a Schaller bridge and a Kent Armstrong humbucker wired with a series/parallel switch. He also hand made the pickguard and redid all the wiring with good quality pots.
The rear Jazz pickup is only there because the empty cavity would be ugly. It's not wired to anything |

This pic has white pup covers over Marcus Miller jazz bass pickups and '62 style controls.
Currently the bass a 2008 AM maple pbass neck, passive MEC pickups with 500k pots and is tuned CGCF. it really cuts through. Growly Warwick tones with traditional styling. I'm loving my frankenbeast. |

| | | | My unique one The top one is very unique as it is designed and builde by myself (well design would be different today, but it's now almost 20 years old...):
Well, started its live as a fretless 5 string. Is now 6 string and will soon recieve a revamp o the pickups and ramp and maybe electronics...let's see.
And, as all my basses are some how modded, actually all are "unique". The 6 string P-Bass has recieved larger pickup holes on this Wed. Electronics to be done, pictures to follow:

Looking at it, I'd guess it has a massive low end to it, perfect for reggae and Dub.

Cool bass though, I wonder what Paul McCartney would say if he'd see that.

It features a hollow translucent acrylic body internally illuminated with real neon, a composite neck running through the body, rosewood fret board, Gotoh hardware and active EMG pickups. The eyes on the two fish are glass eyes used in fish taxidermy.
It is very light weight, has great sustain and can sound warm & thumpy or very modern, depending on string type & playing style.
I usually play it unlit for a song or two, & then light the neon up.
It throws off some serious light, and is a guaranteed jaw-dropper & conversation starter.

The airbrushed colored-in option didn't become available until about 2 years after I ordered mine, and uses white neon for backlighting.
When I ordered mine, you could opt for any two colors of neon for the two fish, & I figured the green/blue combination worked well for the aquatic theme.
Other than mine & the one you posted, the only other I've ever seen was another non-airbrushed version, and the neon colors were purple & yellow.
They are pretty rare - I believe only about 18 - 20 were ever produced.

| | Supporting Member | | | | | My uncle found this at an estate auction a couple of years ago, bought it from him. It is a 1967 Kent model 822. January 2009 Bass Player featured this in Retro Rama Funky Foreign basses and I have a copy of the magazine (Chris Squire on the cover). Mine still has the bridge cover unlike the one in the magazine. It's a cool hollow body short scale bass, in good shape despite finish checking, plays like a dream. I don't play it much - too many other basses get in the way... |

Cool bass though, I wonder what Paul McCartney would say if he'd see that. | Any which way but loose! Naw, naw, naw ... it has Dunlop recessed strap lock recepticles at the normal places. I use a wide, suede-backed strap to eliminate neck dive.
Well, if Paul was looking for anything like his Höfner, he might not like the LeCompte. It has a monster modern sound, but you can dial in some pretty nice vintage tones on the front pickup set passive in single coil mode. It's hugely versatile with Aguilar OBP-3 preamp and Nordstrand dual-coil pickups. It sounds like a big bass - reminiscent of my Foderas. Fun to play, too.
