I guess you can't call it original. It was custom refinished to match the bands jackets first thing after leaving the factory in early-62 but not by Fender.

Eventhough not original, still very, very cool, especially with all the background information you have on the bass, it looks untouched...

Shame the band aren't driving tiny cars.

I'm not sure but it's close. It's gotten darker with age and is now somewhere between gold, blue & grey. all I know it was made in custom color in order to look good with the outfit the band wore. Never got the info about what the color was called.

So this was a custom color not normally offered from Fender in the first place? Very nice and rare piece. Congratulations on owning such a fine instrument.

Thanks. It's a fantastic bass in remarkable good shape. The color was refinished immidetly on top of the original finish upon the bands request but not by Fender so I guess you really can't call it original finish but I'm happy anyway

May be a 63 stripped body, but the neck is from the 70s.

oh yes on the stripped body neck is original, decal is not... Short history of the bass:

Dad bought it in 1966 it was factory fiesta red, the drummer he was playing with in 1970 convinced him to change it to cream to match their band outfits etc...

then in 1979-80 he took it to the only authorized guy in Australia (Merv Cargill) to have fender decals (apparently bought from Leo) and strip it back to natural redo the whole thing in Vintage Nitro and fix the decal that was painted white by hand as you see in the pic... the end result with a custom black pickguard is in the first pic, all electronics, wiring, pickups, frets are original... only the finish was changed... My dad gave it to me on my 30th, as I play bass too... I'm never going to sell it, so the value is purely academic until either I'm too old to play or have no one to pass it on to

edit: Oh and he played it 3 nights a week for 20 years... so the neck and frets have amazing mojo

I also have the original case, pickguard, thumb rest, strap and both covers...

Awesome huh ? aah the 70's... go dad !

I was talking to him today about the Fender just to double check the dates, and he said he still regrets the day he got talked into changing from the original red colour... I told him it's worth more to me than he could imagine, and his mod will live on beyond both of us... actually I just ordered a genuine Fender black sparkle pickguard to put on her... keeping the spirit of the black p/guard my dad put on but adding a little sparkle of my own...

This one is the day he got it and the Selmer 2x12" tube amp (which we still have also)
