Preach's Brubaker JXB-6 Xtreme Buckeye Burl 6

My friend Preach just received his new bass... it's alright.

Specs: Northern Ash body, roasted Birdseye Maple neck, Buckeye Burl top, fingerboard and headstock and Dark Knight emblem. Walnut accent layer. Bartolini Soapbar, Nordstrand Big Single, Bartolini NTMB preamp. Hipshot hardware. 34" scale, 22 fret, 19mm spacing.

I played it over the weekend. It's okay.

Wow that's sick...preach has always been a great influence to me as a bass player. Ever since I was in my teens I used to hang out at atomic just to watch him play and talk!

Is there some sort of advantage in having one Bartolini soapbar and a Nordstand single?

Other than trying that combo and liking it, I don't know.

Is the bass noisy? I believe the Bart is a humbucker and the Big Single is a single coil, so I am not sure if the 60 cycle hum would be canceled with that arrangement.

I'm surprised to see Buckeye Burl used as a fingerboard, I thought it would be waaaay too soft and "punky" for that application. Some kind of polymer treatment?

But, simply gorgeous!

CRAZY lookin' bass. Not too keen on the plastic control knobs, but I'd rock the rest of it.

I don't know. It wasn't when I checked it out but that wasn't in a gig situation. He has a second Bart dual coil on order, this was something they decided to try in the meantime and so far Preach dug it and I think he has gigged with it.

Preach likes the Bartolini knobs. That's why he has them on this and his other basses.

It ain't easy. He just makes it look that way.

This is something Kevin's been doing for a long time now... working with exotic woods as fingerboard material. Basically it involves three layers: a thin veneer, a harder surface below that and then the neck, topped off with a poly finish. That's what he did on my Xtreme 5 way back when and that bass has held up very well.

Here's mine...

Untreated Spalted Maple is a barrel of laughs to work with in thin pieces for obvious reasons. Mine has Spalt on an Ebony layer attached to a Maple neck.

I normally absolutely despise buckeye burl on bass tops, let alone a whole bass, but man, oh man, that is hands down one of the most beautiful basses I think I've ever seen. Absolutely top-notch.

Entirely too sick, dude. I'm sure Preach will be more than happy with that beast.

Oh well. I know Kevin Brubaker is a master builder of basses and Preach has a great reputation as a player. Between the two of them, I am certain they knew what they were doing with this bass!

It may stay like this it end up with a pair of either one... I'm pretty sure they'll try the Bartolini when it comes in. And I haven't brought my JXB-6 six over for a comparison yet... it set a very high bar.
