Precision Basses with Active Preamps

Why are there no pure Precision basses with active preamps? They're all PJs. The Jazz does it, so do Musicman basses.

You are wrong. Fender made two active Precisions; the Special from '80-'82, and the Elite in '83.

Yes. I had an all- walnut Precision Special. I believe it was a 1983. Active, just a P pickup.

Apparently my P Elite has an active preamp. Not sure if it counts as the layout is still mostly an enigma to me and it has two split coil P pickups.

Had an '81 P Special. Still have an '84 P Elite II. Great basses!

Pop a P-Retro pre into any passive P bass, and there you go.....

Totally unnecessary in a good P bass -- IMHO!

I have an EMG PX in this one. Sounds good and is yet another flavor of P. Had my tech rout a rear cavity for the battery, otherwise it's a PITA to get at.

This is why you don't see too many active P basses without a second(bridge) pickup.

It seems a little incongrous to take the world's most popular and simplest bass and put in active electronics. However, that shouldn't stop you!

I was looking at the Alembic basses last night and the 12 control knobs and switches, thinking: I like a bit of control but that's waaaaay too much.

All part of the fun.

Your beautiful Precision seems to have the regular two-knob control setup. Would the stacked bass=treble control be better? Does your bass have a bypass or work with a dead battery? I want to make my Precision active also.

I have the urge to try the john east p-retro. It seems like a very well designed item. However, I've noticed that a lot of guys who installed them pull them out later. The most comon reason seems to be that it takes away from from the K.I.S.S. vibe of the P-bass.

A fellow bassist kindly let me play his walnut Precision Special at a jam one time and it was a killer playing, sounding and looking bass. I like how they have a bypass for the active circuit which gives you the traditional P sound we all know and love, but allows you to put it on steroids with the flick of a switch.

Yup, I agree.
I have an '82 Precision Special and I dislike the pre with the single P pickup. In the active position it's so spikey and it can shred glass, very harsh. So it always stays in the passive position.

No bypass. Dead battery = dead bass. I'm happy with the controls the way they are. I happen to like most EMG stuff and consider this pickup to be an upgrade over the stock one. It still sounds like a P bass but definitely different than my other ones.

Is active necessary? Of course not. Just another flavor of P bass, that's all.

Is that the one with the rechargable battery that uses a wall wart? If so, I could understand not liking it.

FWIW, the P-Retro preamp has passive bypass and works just fine on a dead battery.....

Great true-bypass passive tone if you want it, extra active kick at your fingers if you need it, and no modifications necessary. Its a win-win.

I have been using an Xotic Bass RC booster with my passive P. This pedal works really well with precisions IMO. I gives a very good active sound, a little more higs, a little more lows, and cleaner low mids.
