For the longest time I thought it would be cool to have a Bass VI (I play both guitar and bass and a lot of surf stuff where it could come in handy). The first chance I've ever had to play a Bass VI in person was earlier this year when the Pawn Shop version came on the market. I also had a chance to play the Squier version about a month ago.
All I can say it try one before you buy. I couldn't figure out what to do with the thing once it was in my hands. String spacing was tight like a guitar, but playing it like a guitar didn't quite feel right. When I tried to play it like a bass, I was hitting the right string about 60% of the time. Just felt plain awkward.
Sound-wise, it was a Bass IV, and sounded like one.
My advice: try before you buy, if at all possible. IMHO and YMMV, etc.
