I bought a 1972/3 Mustang a few months ago and I'm really happy about how it plays/feels/sounds/looks. I've got a couple questions about a couple things maybe someone who has seen a lot of these could answer..
I've dated everything to the best of my ability and it looks like I've got the following:
neck from 1972
pots from 1973 (52nd week?)
neck plate from 1973 (508xxx)
pickups from 1974
First of all, I know it's practically impossible to know what happened to many of these Fenders that are 40+ years old, and I've heard that older necks could have been matched up to newer bodies at the factory, but in this case I'm well aware of the possibility of someone putting together a frankenbass along the way somewhere..
As for the questions:
The neck pocket on this bass has a pretty sizeable gap down at the base of the heel. The curves on the pickguard and neck don't match up, and furthermore, it looks like the truss rod screw doesn't line up centered with the dip in the pickguard. Anyone have something that looks similar?
Also, what is the difference with Fenders with the 8 number stamp and the stamps with the month abbreviation written out?
When did the thumb rest move to the bass side of the pickguard? This one has it on the treble side, which lines up with the holes on the body, there are no extra holes under the guard.
