1) MIJ ATK 500: just amazing in all categories. Also has Glockenklang electronics and a Bassculture pickup
2) Squier Affinity P: The only P-bass I currently own, pull it out when I need that P sound. Also has snazzy block inlay stickers (installed somewhat crookedly, gives it 40% more mojo)
3) SX Ursa J: Decent. Helped me discover that I don't really like the J shape.
4) Ibanez something or other. Les Paul shaped, short scale. I'd play it a lot but the jack broke and I can't be bothered to fix it.

86 G&L SB-1- beat to hell from real player wear. Not all original, but love it to death

93ish Ibanez ATK had to try it because it was a "stingray killer"- great sound

09 G&L Tribute L2k stock- 1st "real bass" 1st bass I ever gas'd for

09 Squire Jbass 1st bass. modded. only one with a RW board

? Yamaha RBX 260. Super cheap, threw some Bill Lawrence pickups. 1st Pbass, it's pretty well screwed up for various reasons- it's the "slut" bass- if someone in the band wants to mess with it- they have at it- if they know someone that wants to learn bass- they can have at it

My bass preference changes day to day, so ranking by favorite is impossible. Seriously, I can't begin to compare a G&L hog wonkay with a Kay double bass or a Fender A/E? So here are mine in the order that I got them.

- 1994 Peavey Fury (Pbass)
- 1974 Gibson Grabber Defret
- 1993 Fender MIJ Jazz
- 1987 Pedulla Buzz
- 1989 Peavey Foundation
- 1999 Danelectro Longhorn Defret
- 1989 Fender A/E Pbass Hollow Sunburst
- 1980 G&L L-1000 Mahogany Body

#1 (x2) my gigging basses- Fender MIM Standard Jazz V (sunburst/tort, bassline pups, DR nickel lowriders) or Ibanez ATK305 (trifade, no p/g), depends on what I’m feeling.

#2 – Squier Affinity Jazz V (oly white/tort), great music-room/jam/backup bass, low-stress and does what I need it to do.

#?- New Lightwave SR 5, (red)… aesthetically I’m just not feeling it- too “modern” looking and smallish. Maybe it’ll grow on me, especially I’m wanting a light-weight bass. Maybe I’ll take it apart, plane the body and put a nice woodie top on it which might help.

#4- Fender MIM Precision IV (wine/white, Hipshot D-tuner, DR Jonas Hellborg strings), awesome player, just don’t play 4s at all anymore.

1. "ESP" LTD F4-E fit with emg designed "ESP" pickups. In a natural finish that is just stunning and a cut on the body that is unlike any other body cuts I have seen, I love it.

2. Dean Rhapsody 8 This is an 8 string octave course bass tuned to D-d A-a D-d G-g. It has the chunkiest lows I have heard. A bit of getting used to learning to play but once you get the hang of it its pretty radical

3. Rogue LX406 cheapie 6 string with a decent on board preamp and a passive active push/pull pot. Really surprised with this one, actually sounds pretty massive and fun to play!

4. Yamaha RBX260f My first fretless, another cheapie but a great bass for getting into fretless, can sound almost uprightish with the right technique

5. Ibanez Gio soundgear Just the 4 banger I keep at home for practice, no frills but gets the job done.

I really don't like having to do this, so I'll make it easy on myself.

1. Custom "Pea" bass made by Dan Atkinson.
2. Every other bass I own.

I love all of my basses equally, but my Atkinson is easily the best bass I've ever played. I see a lot more customs in the future.

How 'bout it. I got its 5-string brother as a debt repayment (kinda), and thought exactly the same thing. Mine sounds, plays and feels like a much higher-end bass. Not near boutique, of course, but certainly not a cheapo. I wouldn't be wanting to trade it if it's look just wasn't me.

All of my basses are stock, with rosewood fretboards, and strung with R.Cocco .045-.105 Nickel Roundwounds, unless I noted otherwise:

'80 Rickenbacker 4001 - Jetglo/White. Fitted with Hipshot Ric bridge, strung with R.Cocco .045-.105 stainless steel rounds. This is "Old Reliable". I got it after mowing many a lawn and shoveling even more driveways. It's in my "never part with" club. I like it for Rush, mainly, and some Classic rock tunes as well.

'08 Fender '70s Classic Jazz Bass - Sunburst/Black. Fitted with BadAss II bridge. This is my best feeling bass. The neck is almost perfect, except for the 1-1/2 nut, but that's a minor issue. If I have a "go to" bass. This'd be it.

'07 Lākland Skyline Duck Dunn - Candy Apple Red/Black. Strung with .050-.105 D'Addario Chromes. I use this bass when I'm playing Motown classics that just need the P-Bass/flatwound thump. Kinda heavy, and super well-made.

'99 Squier Precision Bass Special Fretless - Sunburst/Black. Fitted with custom Warmoth neck (unlined, maple fingerboard) and Gotoh 201 bridge. Strung with .045-.100 D'Addario Half-Rounds. I love playing fretless and this bass, with the P/J configuration, is perfect for my style, which is with heavy right hand and in a very rock context.

'05 Fender Standard Jazz Bass V - Midnight Wine/White Pearl. Fitted with an Audere JZ3-VB-3B preamp, .130 B-string. Probably my least played bass, as I'm mainly a 4-banger guy. Some tunes just need a few lower notes, and this bass plays and feels most like my fours.

'80 Peavey T-40 - SiennaBurst/Black. Sentimental favorite. My first bass was a T-40 Natural and I jacked it all up with my lousy 13 year-old luthier skills. I waited over 25 years to bring another one back around. Yeagh, it's a little heavy, but I don't care. I love it.

'03 Fender Standard Precision Bass Black/Black. This is my firehouse practice bass. I leave it there so I don't have to lug one back and forth. It used to was one of my regulars, with my fretless neck, but its lack of a J pickup kinda limited it's fretless tone.

WOW. some of you guys here have a ton of cash just laying around or something to amass these collections. well here is my working/family mans list. I wont include basses that I have owned and have since sold

1. Dean egde 6 string fretless (unlined) with flats. Love Love Love this bass...action, neck, tone...for me its perfect. I have played far more expensive basses and still love this bass. The only way I will get rid of this is if someone steals it.

2. ESP LTD B-206SM 6 string. Love the natural wood look and the pups are nice. Its really not a bad bass...I just cant seem to put down the dean. Once I got the fretless, I dont like playing fretted. Plus it weighs a lot more than the dean.

1. Linc luthier fretless 4 string with Labella tapewounds. Love it, and is what I play 90% of the tuime
2. A mangled 48th st custom jazz bass. Not worth a penny but sounds terrific.
3. A cheap cello tuned like a piccolo bass, a la Oscar Pettiford. A lot of fun.
4. Peavey T-45. Sounds cool, looks cool. Can only play 1 bass at 1 time, though.
5. Havent touched my upgright it in quite a while. Needs a setup badly, that I keep putting off.
6./7/8 enough parts laying around to put 3 cheap basses together.

My Basses

1. Squier VM Jazz, Maple version. Bone stock except for the DR Flats, the first bass I ever bought seriously.
2. Rogue ???, bought at a flea market for $40 and rebuilt everything in the control cavity, put some DR lo-riders on her and she plays ok. More or less this is my I couldn't care less bass.
3. Defretted Jay Turser P bass, A cheapo Jay Turser that somebody stripped the body finish from, Sounds a little muddy and weak, but sometimes fun to play as a fretless.

2) my Peavey Grind (non BXP), comfy but I would like to upgrade the pups and maybe an onboard preamp.
3) Gene Simmons Cort axe bass (bolt on neck), Going to upgrade the pups to the EMG. Not comfy to set and play.
4) my Ibby Jet King. Thinking of selling this one to fund some upgrades to my other basses!!

I have no basses at this time. Sold them all as tonight is my last gig for a while. I am using a friends Geddy Lee which I may buy after tonight. My plan is to have just one bass for noodling at home and playing at church.

My latest GAS is for a Taylor 314ce guitar.

1. Schecter Riot-5 - my number one because it's the only one I've got. I actually really love it. The B string is nice and tight, it isn't too heavy, it looks and plays fantastic, and it sounds great. I've gotten a lot of compliments on its tone and looks from people that aren't even musicians!
