Thanks. Like I said previously I was not leaving the store without it...great history or not. I don't think I would have started this thread if it didn't have an interesting past.

History is always behind playability and sound on a list of priorities. To me anyway.

It's cool you got it. I still kick myself for walking away from basses I should've bought three times. It sucks when you go back to the store in hope that it'll still be there and it's not.

Congrats again!

Don't laugh, this really happens.

I remember this story. Did you keep it the way you found it?

How has it been for ya?

It has worked flawlessly. Put a new set of strings on it though. The old ones were pretty dead.

Just happened to see that pic---I had the SAME bass about 15 years ago. Paid about $150 for it at the time. I replaced the stock PUs with EMG35's, added a Sadowsky style preamp (DIY) and bronze nut. Loved the resonance and fat tone, but the skinny neck was too small for me and I sold it.

Wish I still had it now!

I would LOVE to know what's under that blue paint! I totally dig her backside (pun possibly intended)

I love the neck. It's my favorite bass. Currently strung with Fender flats. Super duper low action. I love it.

Ok I held off on posting because of some controversy over the status of this instrument and whether or not it was stolen. I reached out to the builder who has close ties to Randy Coven and he replied:

Hey,

How are you? I haven't heard from you in a bit.
I spoke to Randy Coven and he says no one stole it from him. He told me that he had to sell it and that you have his "blessings" and to make him proud.

How do you like that?

Much love and peace,
Pavel-

I am really glad to read this.

I could tell you about a very twisted tale but won't, it is too bizarre to recount.

I wanted to say that I wasn't on TB when you first posted this, but seeing it now....
Just wow. Nice bass, awesome story, awesome everything. So cool you found a perfect instrument with a great history on it.
Cheers!
This really gives me hope that some day I'll find that "one" good deal, and be really satisfied with my purchase.

Good for you! I hope you got a screamin' deal.

FWIW, my first bass was an SG copy, so I'm fine with a bit of neck dive. I'm interested in light weight and quality. I'll trade you for my MIM Jazz. Straight across. No need to offer extra cash.

Awesome bass, fun to read the story. Thanks for starting the thread. So often I wonder about the history of used basses I pick up from time to time..... so incredibly neat to read this one!

I just stumbled on this thread. It is one of the coolest threads I've read on Talkbass. Not only is the original story cool, but then I stumble on this, which I also find very cool.

Some guy she had dated gave it to her, and she didn't know who the guy on the tape was. It was pretty cool music, and we listened to it a lot.

One day, my car got stolen, and when we got it back, it turned out the idiot kids who stole it had run out of gas, and when they put gas in it, they put the gas can in the back seat, and it turned on its side, and poured gasoline into my carpet, and some tapes they had thrown there got melted by it. Her tape was one of them, and she was very unhappy, because she loved that tape, and it was irreplaceable, since she didn't know who it was.

All these years later, I am POSITIVE that it was (wait for it...)

RANDY COVEN!!!!

So thanks to your find at GC, I just sent her a message on facebook with links to a bunch of Randy's songs, so she can decide for herself.

Thanks for posting, and great bass.

STOLEN - Thats a pretty big word just to toss around...

?? Why do you think its stolen? Because GC has it? - Celeb gear gets traded in all the time. We get in quite a bit of it.

?? Do you think notable pros dont get sick of gear just like you and I? Beleive it or not, they have a money pinch just like us and may need something else to fill the bill.

Dealers, myself included and especially GC check every sellers id and track it. Laws depending on state are different and you better believe its adhered to or were out of business... This is a cool thread but BEFORE you say HOT or Stolen, be responcible especially if your jumpin on the band wagon without ANY FACTS.

Ever have a bass stolen - it aint fun. Putting doubt on a members purchase - not cool...
