| In most cities, anyone who accepts used items for trade outright purchase are required to have the seller/trader fill out a form or card with their personal info and sign a statement saying they legally own it and can sell it, as well as that they didn't find it, somewhere. These are kept on-site, in case an item is reported stolen and the police show up to look for it. It's not new, either- I worked for a music store in the early-mid '70s and we occasionally helped recover stolen goods. Also, a dealer who buys used items and takes trade-ins is considered a 'pawn-broker' in some places. |
